[Phoenix Rising] Episode 7

Argh..I didn’t like this episode because the evil Louisa is free! >< I was so curious to see how she was going to escape her death and turns out her execution was delayed due to the weather-rain. Why must they give her a chance for Krystal to come back to save her??! Krystal does end up taking the blame and gets imprisoned! What's really annoying is the fact Krystal was blaming herself for being selfish (where she thought Louisa had died and couldn't save her in time) She hated herself so much and felt so guilty where she really shouldn't have! Even if she really did had cancer, she should be able to live the remaining 2 months happily with Sunny and her son. She also blames herself for Louisa to be adopted in that family in the first place. I just wished she knew how evil Lousia was to have been scheming the whole time and lying to her about the cancer. I liked the scene where Leila and Louisa were visiting Krystal in prison because Leila kept insisting that Louisa should take responsibility for her own actions (while Lousia was also there). It was obvious she was trying to say that Lousia should be the one to die and not her. I bet the two sisters (Leila and Louisa) actually hate each other at this point. Leila finds out that the place where she has been staying (Jack's cousin's place) is actually Sunny's home and finds out Sunny's relationship with his sister. She tells him Krystal's situation. At the time Louisa adopted mother had died, he was with her so she requested him to come out in court to be her witness at that time. Sunny's mother and Krystal didn't want him to because that would mean his relationship with her would go public and it could ruin his chances of becoming elected for some high position. In court, Sunny does not go and Krystal is sentenced to death.

[Phoenix Rising] Episode 6

Another good episode!

Ben is back, telling Louisa that it was his mother who had announced the end of their relationship on newspaper and that he has been trying really hard to come back to see her. He tells her that his love for her has never changed, giving her a wedding ring. He promises to help her get out of jail and gives Louisa hope again.

Lousia suddenly starts acting strange and falls ill because of the drugs the doctor has been giving her.

In an attempt to escape, Louisa overhears the doctor and this French guy’s conversation. It turns out he was paid to give these drugs to his patients (ones sentenced to death) as part of his experiment. Louisa confronts him and he takes her away. For an exchange to keep it a secret, the doctor offers to help her fulfill any wishes before she was to be executed. She tells him that she wants to live but he said its very difficult because its not that easy anymore. He cannot find someone to replace her death because now before execution, they have to match the photo with the criminal’s face. Conveniently, Louisa sees Krystal’s medical report on his table and asked the doctor to lie to Krystal saying she has an incurable disease! In exchange, she gives him the wedding ring Ben had given to her earlier. Louisa is sooo evil! She is so selfish and unforgivable! A

After Krystal finds out that she has cancer, Louisa pretends she doesn’t know about her “illness”, and starts begging Krystal to help her find someone that could take the blame in place of her, someone who has cancer who will die anyway..Poor Krystal! Krystal was willing to save Louisa’s life, thinking she will die sooner or later anyway.

Thinking that she doesn’t have much time left, Krystal goes to the other city to pick up her son early from camp in hope to spend more time with him. I would say “luckily” there was crazy storm and landslide stuff happening where Krystal and her son were trapped and unable to return home, because of this, Krystal couldn’t make it back in time to save Louisa.

I felt sorry for the boy when he lost his bag and how he was saying that it was his birthday, he could have had a birthday cake and all but his mother had to take him back early. While in the storm, Sunny goes searching for the two and eventually saves them and the family of three spend a really happy time together. I really felt happy for Krystal in these few scenes. I’m starting to like Sunny’s character more now that I understand his character and how much he does love Krystal.

The day of Louisa’s execution arrives. Louisa becomes really angry at Ben for not being able to do anything to save her. She desperately asked where Krystal was and becomes really disappointed to hear she wouldn’t make it back, thinking Krystal was ‘selfish’ not to save her and decided to avoid seeing her. She goes wild and attempts to take a women as hostage but she eventually fails.

At the end of the episode, the guns are ready to kill her.

I’ve finished this series quite awhile ago and started writing up this Overview, but then got a bit lazy and then left it……..XD So! With some determination, I’ve finally got something to put up =)

*contain spoilers* The series has some funny moments; but I did get bored at other times and found the story a bit draggy but I guess life isn’t always that exciting either ^^;
Family Problems and Characters/Actors

  • Sheren Tang , Michael Tse, John Chiang

Sheren and Michael play a happily married couple with a pair of twins (boy and girl). Michael faces many problems at work (including the fact he doesn’t like his job) and feels immense stress, while Sheren is trying to do her part as best as she could as the housewife, looking after the children, and family, trying to help their children with their education, being actively involved in their children’s activities and using their family’s money efficiently (like the other housewives). Problems start arising where they seem to lack understanding of each other. With this couple, we often see a miscommunication happening with both of them thinking the other doesn’t try to see things in their perspective or understand them more. When an argument occurred, Sheren would say what she believed, Michael would stick firmly to what he believes, but there wouldn’t be any compromise. It was like two different arguments altogether, not willing to hear what the other had to say.
John Chiang was originally a Health and Safety Inspector but after he decides to retire early to look after his daughter, he becomes really good friends with the housewives. Because Michael is busy at work most of the time, John is there to help Sheren when she has problems because Sheren doesn’t want little house matters to bother her husband while he was at work. She doesn’t tell him things that happen, like how the window was about to fall off etc and John ends up telling Michael to treat his wife better. This makes Michael angry and jealous, thinking his wife didn’t ‘need’ him. Sheren only treated John as a friend, but John actually developed feelings for her. This is when Michael becomes stressed where his work mate takes him to some night club where he dances to relieve stress. He realises that his passion for dancing still existed and starts to get ideas of quitting his work and pursue a career in performance. He ends up forming a group, cross-dressing and performing at night, trying to hide the fact from his wife after talking and realising she strongly disagreed that he should pursue his dreams. Little did he know that Sheren had already found out he was a cross-dresser and became so scared that she has developed anxiety disorder.

At the end, I’m glad things worked themselves out. I felt the happiest for this couple because this was the couple I wanted a happy ending for the most. They love each other a lot and I started feeling really sorry for Michael’s character towards the end where his career in dancing was failing and was ‘losing’ his wife.

I think Sheren Tang is a great actress! Her character as ‘Ah Mong’ feels really realistic and convincing, the most easy to relate to out of the three housewives and I liked watching her funny moments, like when she trying to learn to dance.

I wonder if Michael Tse had a fun time playing this role with all the cross dressing and dancing! Personally I feel so embarrassed for him! I was really freaked out when he dress up like that!! I would feel so scared if I was Sheren’s character..the parts leading up to finding out /guessing were enjoyable though. I thought his acting was quite good as well =)
I didn’t like John Chiang‘s character throughout. He seemed so fake and superficial (can see it through his facial expressions); especially after he decided to retire early and look after his daughter. He turned women-ish..was that the whole point? I really didn’t like it when he tried to get close to Sheren, it freaked me out. I just wanted him to keep a distance lol
The thing I just couldn’t understand Sheren was near the end (2nd last episode?) when she told Michael she wanted a divorce. I felt it was so slack because I thought that was what she wanted -for Michael to say to realise that what he did to leave the family was wrong in the first place and that he should have a stable job, not be so selfish to pursue his dreams etc. To me, it felt like she was divorcing for the sake of the story because Kiki and Cecilia were also having a divorce with their husbands… She explains it later and I guess the explanation was ok but still inconsistent from before..did she change her mind it and want him to do want he loved doing the most?

  • Cecilia Ip, Derek Kwok and Fala Chen

This is the first series I’ve seen Cecilia in; I haven’t seen her before either. Her character speaks a bit funny and doesn’t seem to be able to stand still, wobbling while standing which makes me wonder if thats the character she was trying to portray or if its her acting is a bit funny. Cecilia plays the one who is more stuck up; yet the more intelligent one with self control. She’s also the most educated out of the three housewives graduating university before getting married.

Cecilia and her husband Derek used to be rich, but because of the fall in the the value of investments, they lose their money and moved back down from the mountains, so Cecilia had always wanted to move back up and live in her rich home- become a happily married rich women.
Fala is the third party their relationship. It turns out that Derek used to go after Fala years ago, but got rejected. Fala now wants Derek and tries get into their relationship, even though he’s married already. She uses her position as Derek’s potential business partner to take advantage of him. I was watching this series at the same time as Heart of Greed and I couldn’t stand her here..I prefer the cute Fala in HOG; she was so much more likable than her here trying to act more older.

One of the memorable scenes for them was when Fala ‘drugged’ Derek at her home and Cecilia went to save him. Leila then appears, pretending to be a psycho- another girl Derek was seeing and scared Fala off. I have no idea how they got into her house, but it was quite funny!

  • Kiki’s family problems

Their portrayal as housewives are quite impressive, especially Kiki~ she acts just like a typical one! Kiki plays the dumb-ish one out of the three, yet brave enough to stick to her beliefs and stand up for herself, like when the other rich housewives were looking down at her for using sample products etc. Kiki’s family is the least emphasised out of the three. her husband owes a lot of money and ends up running away from home, neglecting his family. Kiki ends up taking Government Social security payments. He later returns, but still in hiding and turns out that he’s having an affair, in which the other women is controlling their lives. She blackmails Kiki, telling her to back-off ‘her’ husband or she’ll report to the police that they have tricked the government’s money. I personally think Kiki should have just reported to the government that her husband has been found and stop their payments. She can’t live on her life being blackmailed forever, and losing her husband and having the family break apart. When the other women said she was pregnant with his child, Kiki actually wanted her to keep the baby…got on my nerves!

  • Leila, Kenneth and ‘Yoyo’

Leila plays ‘Yoyo’ (Kenneth’s character’s wife who had recently passed away) ‘s friend and the sister in-law of John Chiang. I didn’t like her character at the start, especially how she was so stuck up, lazy, and had nothing better to do than to cause trouble to the three housewives. She always thought that the housewives caused the death of her friend because they “gossiped” about her having an affair with another man. Eventually she becomes their friends and falls for Kenneth who has been looking out for her as his wife’s friend. Personally I didn’t like this couple. Chemistry? Maybe just a little. I also didn’t like Kenneth’s frizzy looking hair and his character was a bit odd too (Same feeling I got from John Chiang’s character, minus the woman-ish part).
I was interested to find out the truth behind ‘Yoyo’s death though~ I couldn’t quite figure it out XD

Ending

A very happy ending =) I think its very, very, very complete..
Mistake?

*Kenneth didn’t know that the man who was bothering his wife was Leila’s brother; so was surprised when he saw her brother’s photo. But in the final episode, the video clip recording his wife did before she committed suicide had already said that that man was Leila’s brother.

*In episode 17, Leila crashes and falls off her bike, hitting her head hard on the ground and her head is bleeding heaps, but the next second she doesn’t look hurt at all…I found that part really unrealistic..

La Femme Desperado?

Firstly, the themesong is sung by Miriam Yeung again . We have Sheren Tang and Michael Tse as the leading couple in the series but this series is like going back to the traditional views of women (quite the opposite) of staying at home and being housewives. The three women gave up their dreams to look after their husband and children and they are committed and really happy housewives. They want to be the best housewife and they understand that their husband works hard and is the bread-winner in the house, going back to the traditional views. Both the men and women in this series face their own problems. Maybe its a mix of La Femme Desperado and Men in Pain but quite different in issues faced.
Recommend? Not really..Personally I didn’t think it appealed to me much. I don’t feel that I’m their target audience. It’s not a bad series, but I wouldn’t mind skipping it.

[Phoenix Rising] Episode 5

Another interesting episode =) The truth finally comes out…

As I had hoped, the fat women did become friends (to some extent) with Louisa and helped her when she was getting bullied but it didn’t last long because the fat women had to be executed. While I watched the series up till now, I always had thought that this women seemed to see things quite positively, especially the part where she was happily writing the list of food she wanted to eat for her last meal. We find out that she is actually a “Tai Sei Gwai” – in jail because she is taking the place of someone else who had committed the crime. On the actual day of execution, she suddenly feared death. She didn’t want to die, and kept on yelling out that she was innocent, only a “Tai Sei Gwai” but of course, it was too late then.

Louisa becomes horrifying, hearing her scream and when she heard the sound of execution, she imagined herself to die the same way.

Lousia begged Krystal to find a person like that for her (even attempting to commit suicide if she didn’t) so Krystal ends up agreeing but Leila ends up finding out their plans. Leila ends up talking to Jack about her worries and Jack figures out a way that may help her.

Jack, as the doctor, comes in with Leila and Krystal (Louisa is lying injured in bed) and they show her a “truth or lying” machine. I was quite impressed they had a technology like that then already and they said it had scientific backings that the machine works and usable in court. On the back of my mind, I was thinking- well if such thing existed, court trials would be so much easier, wouldn’t they? Where is it nowadays though? Turns out that the machine was actually fake and was only used to lure Louisa into telling the truth. After a test run, asking what her name was and it turned red/green, Louisa refused to use the machine, thinking it was real and ends up telling the truth.

When she was little, she became very sick with a high fever but her adopted parents refused to take to her the doctors. It turns out that they had only adopted her to help them take on all the bad luck they were meant to face instead. Their room was already filled with those superstitious stuff. Louisa had heard their conversation and eventually faints on the ground. When reaching out helplessly, they continued to let her be. From that point on, she knew that the parents didn’t love her and she was on her own. Luckily she eventually recovered from her fever. When other kids used their money to buy toys, she secretly bought medicine to stock up so that she could take them if she ever got sick again. She wanted to live. When everything was fine, Louisa’s parents would buy her things, so that others thought she was living a happy life, including Krystal (whom the two had still kept in contact with). However, when she went to school, they stopped her from making friends and constraining and controlling her life. It wasn’t until one she grew up and eventually met Ben and the two fall in love. He was a rich man’s son who was giving Louisa’s adopted parents lots of business, so they didn’t go interfere with their relationship and let the two date each other. After dating for several years, the two wanted to get married, but her parents started getting worried again. They didn’t want her to marry because she was used as their decoy for bad stuff.

Eventually, because of their greed for money, the two decided to let the marriage go ahead. We then what has happened in the first episode. On their wedding day, a bell falls on Louisa’s mother’s and she falls back and injures her leg. The parents believed it was wrong to let Lousia go, so she suggested to delay their wedding until her leg was healed, but it turns out that her leg had already healed a long time ago and was only faking it so Louisa would not be allowed to marry him. Louisa also hears all the bad, false lies her mother was telling the doctor about Krystal(who was the nurse there) and became really angry. At the end, she pushed her down the stairs, where the other nurse had seen.
After her story telling, she finds out that the machine was a fake and she gets extremely angry at the three..
At the end of the episode, Ben comes back to see her..

Hi K for TVB guests and returning visitors!

3 weeks have gone by and its already time for me to go back to uni XD I really had a great break but funnily enough I realised that I didn’t blog here as much as I had hoped or imagined XD I thought I’ll have heaps of time to, but when I’m in the holiday mood I’ve been spending my time doing lots of other stuff instead =) Its ok right? It is the break after all !  Nevertheless, I still had my daily dosage of TVB and managed to catch up on all the Heart of Greed Episode I’ve missed.

Don’t worry! If its not exam time (when things get busier), I usually still manage to dig up time every day to come and update here! Looking forward to your continuous support, always!

[Phoenix Rising] Episode 4

Luckily, Sunny is there to help Krystal and she and the other nurse is free to leave. Back in those times, if you were rich, had status and connections, anything was negotiable.

As quickly as I had hoped, the three sisters reunite in this episode! When they were young, the three of them use to leave messages at the Church under the floor board which only they knew about. There, Leila finds a letter that Louisa had left recently, which revealed that she and Krystal were sisters. Krystal came and Leila hid on the side, hearing Krystal praying as she spoke about the lives of her two sisters and when they were young. Leila drops one of those marbles that Krystal had given her when they were little (with their name on it) and Krystal immediately recognised it, calling out her youngest sister’s real name and Leila reveals herself. However, when Louisa found out, she hated Leila even more, knowing that her sister was the one who stopped her plan.

Krystal and Leila go to investigate in hope to find more evidence to help prove Louisa innocent. They went to find the nurse in hope for her to tell the truth or perhaps gather more information about the situation. However, the nurse stood on her grounds, saying she saw Louisa push her own mother down the stairs. The nurse seemed to want be running away from loan-sharks whom she owed a lot of money to, and due to an accident, she gets run over by a car. Just before the moment of death, the two sisters begged her to tell the truth. The nurse ended up saying the same thing as before.

The two later go to visit Louisa’s home and we see Louisa’s adopted father who appears to have gone insane after his wife’s death. it explains why he didn’t turn up all this time. It really doesn’t look like he killed her now and was mumbling something about Louisa, but I couldn’t understand it. His room was filled with superstitious things, “protecting” him as if something was going to get him. The sisters later go into Louisa’s room and find a photo taken when Louisa was young, with her adopted father and mother but the faces of the adults were scratched off. On Louisa’s bed, they find Buddhist-beads that have been smashed.

It’s really mysterious 0_0 I’m starting to think Louisa is highly suspicious. Why would someone lie about something like that at the moment of death? How was the nurse going to benefit from it? Louisa defends her case by saying that the nurse is really just plain evil. When they asked her about the photo, she said they had an argument back then so she was really angry, so she scratched them. She broke the beads but didn’t want her mother to be upset, so she hid them. . .

Episode 21

After the incidence, Ron notices that the phone chain/accessory on Joey’s phone had broken. Secretly, he kept it and hoped to buy a new one, making Joey think she dropped it somewhere. After searching many places, he realised that you couldn’t buy the same one back because it was one where you had to make it yourself. Ron spends the night re-making the same one back for her.

Seeing that Joey was in a bad mood (I think it was because of her confused feelings for him), he takes her out to eat Sushi and wanted to surprise and cheer her up by pretending that he found phone accessory she had previously dropped.

Joey realises that it wasn’t the same one she had lost. She thanks him quickly and leaves.

Ron chases after her wondering what was wrong and Joey gets mad. She tells him that she knew the one Ron he gave wasn’t her one because when she tried making it herself, she accidentally damaged part of it. She angrily asks why he had lied to her; why he did what what he did. “Do you have so much time on your hands? ” “Why did you do that?”

Ron becomes quiet and speechless. He softly replies “I don’t even know why I did it..”

Ron continues to walk behind Joey, accompanying her home. When she gets home, she turns around and reminds him that he already has Tavia.

[Phoenix Rising] Episode 3

In this episode, we see Leila’s perspective of things and learn more about the sister’s relationship. It turns out that she has returned to Shanghai in hope to look for her long-lost sisters, but the only source that she has were 2 marbles that had her real sister’s real names on them. The orphanage they used to live at is demolished and replaced by the jail they are currently at. The only thing left is the Church. I really hope she’ll find out that Louisa and Krystal are her real sisters soon. They are so close yet they don’t realize. The ‘bad’ thing is the fact that Leila has interfered and stopped Krystal from helping Louisa by informing the police! I wonder how she would have felt if she knew…

On other note, Jack Wu has appeared as a guy who is pursuing Leila (followed her to Shanghai), even though she has made it clear to him that she only sees him as an ordinary friend. In order to be see her more often, he becomes the doctor working at the Jail with Leila.
