[Phoenix Rising] Episode 14

I wasn’t very pleased with the first half of this episode- Leila and Krystal attempt to escape from prison, succeeded, yet ended up going back again! It annoys me because the old women got beaten up and suffered for nothing! She didn’t betray them because she wanted the two to escape! I just feel its such a waste of an opportunity..It was like they were asking to be tortured when they went back.

Another complaint I’m having with this series is Louisa’s character. What are her true motives? Can someone just be plain selfish? I just don’t feel it’s convincing enough for her to want to kill off her sisters. Was she that scared they’ll come back for revenge? Or get their son back? (She can always have her own child ..) Krystal made it clear when she escaped the first time that she will not try to get her back in prison. Now that Louisa is rich and all, shouldn’t she be trying to save her sisters?? Instead, she uses the money to try to kill Krystal off earlier…She finds out Sunny’s relationship with Krystal..=X

Sunny’s mother is the other annoying character. She says she cares about Krystal and her grandson but doesn’t do anything to try save her. She ends up locking Sunny in a room. How old is he?? Such a selfish women..
There were two parts I quite liked out of this episode though. One was how all the prisoners became friends with Krystal because they respect her for coming back for her friends (referring to the old women). At least now she’ll have more help and won’t be tortured in prison anymore. Too bad there’s only three days left..

One I was most surprised of was when the bitchy lady saved Krystal and how all of them were saying they’ll do as much as they can to help her. When they saw Krystal look over to Leila, they knew she wanted to talk to her and they helped passed the message. I thought that was sweet =3

I also liked the moment when they asked her “Why did you kill someone for?” It didn’t sound like a kind-person like Krystal to anyway! I sorta wished she told them ^^;

The other part I liked were how Sunny’s two bodyguards/followers were worried about Sunny when had gone missing. They believe that Sunny’s mother or wife had captured him somewhere and so are out to search for him. I hope they find him soon =3

[The Drive of Life] Episode 3

After playing around at Beijing with Feng and the business with the funeral is done, Feng convinces Raymond not to avoid his father anymore by going home to face him and try to compromise with him somehow. Damien gave Raymond a chance to do his own business if he gave him a proposal he was happy with. After going to some Hot Spring with Feng, Raymond decided on the spot that he wants to start a Hot Spring Hotel in Beijing. Damien ends up letting him proceed and Raymond excitedly followed his assistance’s information; heading out to buy the land.
Charmaine comes into the scene! Her character is quite amusing as well. She’s good at deceiving people to get things her way. They mistaken her as Stella Choi (the manager they needed to speak to) after Charmaine drops the business card. It turns out she’s one of their competitors (agents) for the land and she ends up getting all their information. I knew she looked suspicious because of that mischievous smile on her face when Raymond was telling her about his plans.

Adjustments to the synopsis given by TVB:

*Yoyo and Bobby were already really good friends to start off with.

Comment: I think promotional image looks quite funny! I hope it would be lighthearted, refreshing and enough to keep me entertained. When I think of Bobby and Yoyo I think of their collaboration in Forensic Heroes. I’m not too fond of Jacky Wong =\ Hope he isn’t as annoying as all the other kids he’s played before; especially not speaking like in oldie..

[Phoenix Rising] Episode 13

After realising the man Sunny was going to seek help from had died and was no longer able to use that power to set Krystal free, Leila didn’t give up in hope and attempted to escape illegally again! While asked to clean the basement, Leila remembers a tunnel to the sewages hidden behind the cupboard and realises a potential way out. She asks Jack to help her and tells her the plan. Jack eventually tells Sunny in hope that he’ll help out because it would make things easier but he disagreed with the illegal act. Knowing he could not save her through the plan he initially has planned, Sunny decided to tell the head of the police about being with Krystal during the time of Louisa’s adopted mothers’ death (as a time-witness). However, Sunny’s mother overhears (as always!!) and uses Sunny’s wife to threaten him if he did. At the end, Sunny decided to help Leila and Krystal escape.

In jail, the old lady found out news that her husband may be dying and she wants to see him for the last time before he leaves. Knowing Leila and Krystal had escaped out of jail before, she has closely kept her eyes on them and eventually finds out their plans. She blackmails them to take her with them to escape or she’ll stop them both.

The plan was to get a sudden black-out and in the confusion, hide away in the sewages/water system thing.
On the other hand, Louisa burns down her adopted parent’s home and sends away her adopted father.

[The Drive of Life] Episode 2

Raymond Lam makes his first appearance! His character is so cute! XD I loved watching all his scenes, his little driving adventure and encounter with Feng Shao Feng ^^ Feng offers Raymond a lift in his car for $20 and he squashes in the back seat. Raymond tells him it was getting hot and asked if he could turn on the air-conditioner but Feng tells him that the car won’t be able to support so many people. He offers a drink for $5 and Raymond takes it, realising it wasn’t cold. Feng tells him that the iced ones are $10 but they’re all sold out already. He then offers Raymond a paper fan for $2 XD

You’re pretty good at doing business
Michael Miu on the other hand continues to flirt with other girls, meeting Vivien Yeo in this episode. At the motor-race when Damien was talking to Raymond, we can see Michael in the background waving and smiling to another girl.

Damien’s threat to resign from his position was a very smart move! I wouldn’t have thought of it myself..

The Opening theme video looks and feels very different from other themevideos! I was imagining it to be on the lines of the MV, but I guess its trying to be unique. Do I like it? Not really..too much of the same red-ish colour. Okies, on to the series!
The Cantonese dubbing/voices for the Mandarin speaking actors  don’t seem to suit the person and emotions seemed lost. It’s annoying to watch but hopefully it gets better or I’ll start getting used to it.

I’m actually more interested in other characters rather than the story about the three brothers (main characters) , so hopefully the others will get more screentime!

[Phoenix Rising] Episode 8

Nancy Wu appears as a new prisoner who is pregnant with her boyfriend’s baby. She was imprisoned as a result of injuring her boyfriend after she realised that he was two-timing and seeing another women. I quite like her here. She’s able to stand up for herself so isn’t easily picked on. She often uses the baby as a threat to the officers there. Krystal is nice to her and seem to take care of her, so in return, she treats her nicely too and they stick out for one another while in jail.

Even though Louisa is the evil one, I didn’t seem to mind her taking revenge on her adopted parents because I hated them too. I do feel sorry for her that she has to pretend she likes her adopted parents, facing her adopted father all the time. When no on is around, she’ll express her hatred and anger towards him, justifying that they were the ones who caused Krystal to go to jail (rather than her own selfish doings). Seeing that Krystal’s adopted mother was unable to look after Krystal’s son (due to old age) and as a way to “repay” Krystal, she offers look after her son as her own and Krystal agrees.

I liked the last moment of this episode because Leila and Jack overhears that the doctor has been testing drugs on Krystal and that in fact she doesn’t have cancer at all! In the midst of fighting, the ring Louisa had given the doctor drops out of the doctor’s pocket!

Warning: Ending Spoiler!!

[All my posts contain spoilers, but this is the ending, so an extra warning message ^__^]

This episode was quite ordinary. I guess I can’t really expect much from TVB endings these days. Now all I expect is getting a satisfiying ending ..It wasn’t hard to predict other than the fact Kenny ends up killing the bad guy *go Kenny^^* Gives his character more of a significance and Sammul does end up firing his gun to save Michael so that was pretty cool too.

I wished they didn’t make Sonija die..It just makes the whole thing really tragic. I really wished Sonija and Michael could live happily ever after with their baby. The parts leading up to and including Sonija getting captured were heartbreaking.. Its just so sad she had to be tortured to death. At the point they had to make the decision to do the operation to take the baby out- its pretty certain she won’t live. At least Michael won’t be as lonely with their baby..
Joey and Ron on the other hand got together but I found it quite ordinary. Suits the couple and their situation I suppose. No hugs or holding hands, but serious talking. Actually I’m not even sure if Joey accepted him at that point because when Ron held out the toy to her, we don’t see her accept it but I assume she does or eventually will. In the last scene, we see Ron smile when he receives an sms which I’m also assuming its from Joey, but he doesn’t mention who it really is.
The episode ended with the typical theme-related scene, where they were called for another action and the group all get ready for it. typical, but still cool =)
Screencaptures from the final episode

Series Overall?

I’ve only seen episode 11-30 but I found the series quite enjoyable, but thinking back, I don’t feel much has happened in the 20 episodes. I think a lot were training and marching. I really like the cast (including supporting casts) watching the team spirit, everyone looking out for each other and seeing character and relationship developments (there’s heaps!) The couple I liked watching the most was Michael and Sonija so I was disappointed with their ending. Ron and Joey had some cute moments but these were very limited. I did feel sorry for Tavia’s character when Ron broke up with her. I think she looks better with Ron than Joey but I guess distance-relationships don’t always work out that well.I don’t feel that Sammul and Ron are as main as Michael’s character. I see their roles as relatively smaller when compared to him, especially towards the end where Michael and Sonija’s relationship is the main focus. I’m really impressed by Michael and Sonjia’s acting =D They have really good chemistry and they look good together too! Kate was quite funny here. At first I found her crazily annoying and obsessed with her cousin Ron, so much it seemed like she wanted the whole world to see her love for him. Later on, I started to see her as a comic-reliever. Its better than seeing Kate in her usual roles so just try and watch her with positive light and you may find her quite amusing and cute ^^
