A Chip off a Block

Synopsis

While the saying “Like father, like son” holds true for most fathers and sons, it does not for CHOR FAN (Sunny Chan) and CHOR TSZ (Ron Ng). There is a world of difference between their personalities, manners of dealing with people and even goals in life. FAN is an out-and-out 60’s person, whereas TSZ believes he is well ahead of the 21st century. A thought-provoking time travel modern comedy, A Chip Off the Old Block reminds audience of the Chinese saying “Man is not born to greatness, he achieves it by his own efforts.” TSZ is accidentally sent back from the 21st century to the 1960s. He befriends his father, who is a young man then. FAN puts TSZ up in his place, where TSZ comes to know the stingy KO SHAN CHEUN (John Chiang), who runs a noodle stall, the shrewish landlady TAM LAN CHING (Gigi Wong), the argumentative CHING LAN FUN (Shirley Yeung), who later becomes his sweetheart, and LEUNG PIN PIN (Nancy Wu), who comes from a rich family. TSZ is always abusing and offending people. Other tenants, especially corrupt sergeant NGAU CHING WING (Yuen Siu Cheung), hate him very much. Except for FAN, who always defends him and even later introduces him a job at a department store. In the 60’s now, TSZ however is as flamboyant as when he is in the 21st century. He finds FAN being too old-fashioned and kind-hearted. He almost makes other tenants homeless once, and he tries to destroy FAN and SO FUNG NI’s (Myolie Wu) relationship. Later when he realizes his wrong doings, he is shocked to know that..

This drama sure is heading uphill! Each episode seem to be getting better and better! In Episode 17 of [Beyond the Realm of Conscience], we have a few very exciting scenes to look forward to. I’ve decided to focus this entry  mostly on Tavia and Selena, so hope you enjoy it! 🙂

Kara can’t hold still, always trying to find ways to climb up the ladder. She tries to suck-up to Selena but wasn’t actually clever enough to fulfill her needs, lol. Hopeless. Hor Wai is unimpressed by how simple minded she is as her plans are often not thought through properly. She warns her time and again to stop doing little things; and to concentrate on getting along with Susanna/Michelle/Charmaine until the opportunity arises. Of course, she never listens and upon seeing Susanna and Kwok Keung engage in a conversation, she decides to set her up!

Selena prepared some gifts for her parents, one for her mother and two for her father, including a box. Upon hearing Susanna created them, she angrily pushes the box off the table, revealing a love letter inside! Not hard to figure out who put it in there, aye? XD

Yi Kei marches into the House of Proceedings and boldly slaps Susanna across the face! She angrily starts yelling and screaming how she is trying to seduce her husband. After denying the accusations, Yi Kei reveals the hand-written love-note and verbally abuses her as a sad, desperate lady. Selena strongly backs up her mother, saying the evidence is sufficient and there’s nothing else to say. The handwriting on the letter however, was not Susanna’s. There’s also no mention of a name on the note. Hor Wai instantly recognises the handwriting to be Kara’s and discreetly glares at her.

Yi Kei slaps Susanna

Michelle starts questioning how she found the letter in the first place, and explains the finished product goes through many people before it reaches Selena. Why would she place a letter in such an obvious location for her to spot? Charmaine adds that the letter states the two will have a secret meeting tonight, but everyone knows that Kwok Keung is out of the Palace! yay, go girl! This is so amusing, as every bit they point out makes Kara look really dumb XD Surely she should have done her research first? This leaves them without sufficient evidence and they leave (not before insulting them more though, lol) I thought this scene was really exciting! It was also nice to see Michelle backing Susanna up, and concerned for her 🙂

Setting out on their quest for fame and fortune, three female TV stars of different backgrounds are resolved to achieve their dreams at any price. But after so many ups and downs in their acting careers, they finally come to discover the secret of true beauty.

Driven by sheer vanity, KO CHING MAN (Kate Tsui) takes part in a beauty pageant despite the strong opposition of her mother, a long-retired actress named CHEUNG LAI HUNG (Yuen King Tan), and leaps to stardom soon after winning the championship. Rising actress TONG HO YEE (Sharon Chan) feels threatened by MAN and decides to join another TV station to look for a breakthrough, which is not supported by her production assistant friend DEACON CHONG (Chris Lai Lok Yi). Leading actress KEUNG CHIN FUNG (Christine Ng) used to be a bitter rival of HUNG. Realizing that MAN’s acting career is taking off at top speed, FUNG means to approach her as a mentor, through which she hopes to drag the girl into her moral downfall bit by bit. Desperate for everlasting beauty, FUNG injects herself with illegal substances in an attempt to slow the aging process. But things do not really go as planned and her face starts to change in shape. Her advertising deal with a cosmetics company is subsequently canceled and MAN has soon replaced her as the new product endorser. Even the Award of Best Actress, which she has won for years, is slipping out of her hands. To vent her anger, FUNG seeks to extract revenge on MAN, finally plunging her into a world of pain and trouble.

[Born Rich] Polls

Born Rich Cast

Wow, the story is getting more intense! In episode 16 of [Beyond the Realm of Conscience], Tavia and Selena start battling it out! A very exciting episode with plenty of drama 🙂 The focus starts to shift more on Tavia and Selena which is quite refreshing. The Proceeding Palace Household (with the exception of Susanna and Charmaine) do not appear in this episode at all. Good- I think we could all use a little break from them! Well, let’s get started 🙂

The episode starts off with Susanna headings towards Yi Kei’s domain, when Kwok Keung accidentally bumps into her. She temporarily loses balance and he holds onto her, which his wife happens to witness. At this moment, you can see Kwok Keung has a great deal of concern in his eyes… but the two refrain from doing or saying anything personal-they simply nod and leave. Yi Kei is very jealous seeing the two interact, and again takes it out on her by making derogatory remarks. She harasses her and rubs in how lovey-dovey she is with Kwok Keung. Anyone feeling the need to proclaim love to the world is plain insecure. Susanna finds the taunt very hurtful and even sheds a few tears when back in her room. She has no intention of getting Kwok Keung back, but Yi Kei is unwilling to back off. Poor Susanna, she’s treated like a low-level servant despite her achievements..

Susanna and Yi Kei

Charmaine approaches Kwok Keung about the situation, hoping he is willing to stop Yi Kei from harassing Susanna. As he continues to be bitter about the past, Charmaine reveals to him Susanna’s side of the story. He becomes overwhelmed by the truth and feels guilty and regretful. He wastes no time and confronts Susanna in a very sorrowful manner.

When the two finally talk, they reach an understanding of the past and the two leave with their minds at ease. It’s as though a heavy burden has been lifted off them. Kwok Keung wishes to make it up to her, but Susanna says she only wishes for his happiness. He already has a wife and daughter; he should value what he has today. I really enjoy watching these two, there’s so much emotion in their eyes. This may sound a bit weird, but I felt they had a lot more chemistry than Char/Kev..anyone agree? Kwok Keung shows a great deal of anguish when he realises he has mistaken her all these years. So many words still left unsaid. On a slightly random note, did anyone find Susanna’s voice in this scene very odd? She sounds extremely soft and girlie..lol I guess you would sound a bit different talking to your (ex)lover.

Yay, we’re up to the 15th episode synopsis of [Beyond the Realm of Conscience] – that’s half way through! Hope you’ve all been enjoying the summaries/reviews so far, and thanks to everyone who has been following! The story sure has gone far, with Tavia getting closer and closer to Moses, and Selena finally making her appearance 🙂 Looks like more drama, conflict (and bitchiness) coming up!

Mary suggests to Moses he should consider marriage and starting a family. She doesn’t mind the girl’s status, as long as she’s good natured and has a big heart. Charmaine instantly comes to his mind, and he promptly goes off to find her. The two meet under the tree where they first encountered as children. Just as he was about to propose to her, Charmaine notices a servant watching nearby, who used to serve Susan. As she gets close to Moses, she unveils a knife and attempts to kill him! Luckily Kevin warned him from afar and the two face-off. She is eventually detained and taken away. Charmaine injures her hand among the confusion, and Kevin attends to her holding onto her hands. This surprises and saddens Moses…realising that the two have feelings for each other. He later overhears the two confessing their love to each other and becomes heart-broken. He decides to postpone the marriage selection to a later date. aww..

Moses sees Charmaine and Kevin

Tavia tells Charmaine she has a love interest, and Mary enters the room knowing she was referring to Moses. Mary has taken a like in Tavia and encourages her to give it a try. When Moses sees Charmaine and brings up his dilemma of marriage, she asks him to consider Tavia. Oh, what a stab in the heart! Having the girl you love pushing you to someone else is quite an awful  feeling. Is Charmaine really this dense, not able see Mose’s feelings for her? Knowing that’s how Charmaine feels, Moses decides to accept Tavia to make Charmaine happy. Is it just me, or does Tavia and Moses not have any chemistry?? I’m not convinced Tavia is in love with Moses…seems like she’s only in it for the power. It’s totally in Tavia’s nature to do that, but I feel awkward watching them o_o.. Moses is only with her because of Charmaine, so it’s hard to imagine some real sparks between them. Everything feels unnatural.. (starting to remind me of Moses and Tavia from Moonlight Resonance). I find it a bit hard to watch the two right now 😡 Hopefully this feeling will change as the story progresses (though I have my doubts!)

O.M.G. I just finished watching [Beyond the Realm of Conscience] episode 14 and so much crap happens that I don’t even know where to start….lol…and when I mean “crap” I mean, there’s a lot of bitches!!! XD The plot is getting heavier and characters are not as simple as they appear. And yes, Tavia is starting to really creep me out, too. Having said that, the story is pretty exciting, we’re almost half way through! I’ve allocated a portion of this entry on my thoughts on Susan. Hope you like it!

Hor Wai ends up promoting Susanna to take over Rosanne’s position as the Head of Furniture Proceedings! Charmaine is promoted to the Head of Jewellery and Tavia takes over her previous role. This is sure to cause more trouble..Kara is unimpressed by Hor Wai’s decision, who confronts her privately, revealing to us that she is actually her niece! Kara has been eying Hor Wai’s position for a long time, and questions whether she’ll keep her words and make her the Head soon. Hor Wai assures her this arrangement is for the best. With Susanna being favoured by Mary, Michelle is sure to become jealous and fight to death with her. Charmaine is known to be a goodie-two-shoe so she’s not a threat to them at all. With Susanna and Michelle down, Kara will be the only candidate for the position when the time comes. HOW EVIL ARE THEY? Kara is extremely amused and commends Hor Wai for being so witty… oh my goodness…Was getting rid of Rosanne also part of their plan..? This is quite a shocker. Although I was a bit wary of them, it’s not until now that their evil scheming is confirmed! They’re not simple at all. Boy was I wrong for thinking Hor Wai actually cared about the two!

Hor Wai and Kara Plot

Meanwhile, Moses is making arrangements to amend errors made by previous Emperors. Susan suddenly marches in with his ancestor’s plates. She attacks Moses’s decision, insisting he’s being disrespectful to his ancestors by suggesting they were wrong. She then turns to Kwok Lun, pointing out that he was there at the time, contributing to the “wrong doings”. If Moses is making amendments, why isn’t he punished? Why is Moses covering up for the person responsible for the misfortune? She continues to claim he doesn’t deserve to be the Emperor.
