Season of Love

Synopsis

Although individuals in love seldom coincide with each other in terms of happiness, anger, sorrow or joy, they still comply with the laws of nature, reflecting the dynamic phenomena of the four seasons’ climate and temperature.

Spring: By chance, LAM CHUN-FUN (Toby Leung) becomes an assistant/driver for the most sought-after actor SZE SUN (Him Law). Thinking that he is just like those playboys featured in the gossip magazines, she gradually comes to realize his true personality after the two spent some time together. The two fall in love with each other during filming, but CHUN-FUN discovers it is merely pre-arranged by the talent manager. The belated first love is ended before it can even begin.

Summer: HA CHI-YAN (Kate Tsui), the most bankable TV producer, has drawn criticism from the social activists after making a female-oriented programme. Seeking to uphold her reputation, she is assigned as the leading role of a new dating game show. During the show, she re-encounters her long-lost old flame NG TSUN-KAI (Ron Ng) and attempts to wreak vengeance on him. Unexpectedly, their hearts have yearned to be together as her wedding day is around the corner.

Autumn: In spite of working in the same building, Hairstylist HO TSAU-SANG (Nancy Wu) let the opportunity of meeting Barrister FUNG SAU-MAN (Vincent Wong) escape owing to a minor incident. Out of despair, she blindly agrees to marry her co-worker FONG KA-WAI (Oscar Leung), following which are the constant disputes over chores and KA-WAI’s suspected extramarital affair. Alternating to a parallel universe, TSAU-SANG is the one to have the serendipitous encounter with SAU-MAN. Having gone through two entirely different life paths, she ends up feeling merely grief and regret.

Winter: Private detective CHU CHO-AN (Kenneth Ma) is entrusted by his client YIU TUNG-NEI (Myolie Wu) to trace the history of a decade-old receipt, during which, CHO-AN learns about some flashback segments in TUNG-NEI’s memory of being with another male. According to his investigation, TUNG-NEI has suffered a serious injury, and her memory loss might be romance related. While CHO-AN is striving to help TUNG-NEI restore her memory, unexpectedly, he also joyfully re-links his family.

Friendly Fire

  • Watching the slow, boring, draggy finale episode of ‘Friendly Fire’ almost put me off from writing up this blog entry. That’s right…! It was that boring. But then I had second thoughts and figured that since I did give this series a go, I might as well drop down a few of my thoughts on the drama and see what you guys thought of it.
  • Friendly Fire  is an enjoyable TVB series, with a decent size cast. What I felt lacking was the chemistry between the characters. I didn’t particularly like any of the characters so I couldn’t get myself involved in the series. I was watching the characters and couples, but not feeling for them.
  • The drama uses a few typical TVB formulas in it but tries to stand out via some “bold suggestive scenes”: Tavia Yeung and Michael Tse’s ‘intense bed scene’, Derek Kwok and Alice Chan’s “passionate kissing scenes”, Alice Chan and Grace Wong’s sexy outfits, Samantha Ko’s rape scene, Christine Kuo seducing Michael Tse in the car, Sammy Leung naked bath scene, Sharon Chan revealing wet-bra scene and some others which have also made some headlines around the internet. I think TVB is trying hard to increase their viewership (especially since rape scenes seem to be so common in TVB these days) although I read an article that it didn’t quite help increase the ratings for Friendly Fire.
  • Michael Tse’s character was like watching Laughing-Sir become a lawyer. His character is prettttttty much the same: he looks the same, and even wears the same grey suit (not sure if this part is true but you get what I mean!) Nothing particularly stood out with his role or portrayal of JJ. His collaboration with Tavia Yeung reminded me of them in Cupid Stupid- it didn’t feel fresh.

Friendly Fire

  • Tavia Yeung’s plays a lawyer again after her role in The Other Truth, but her role reminds me more of The Hippocratic Crush, where she has apprentices and also has health issues (possibility of cancer/need of an operation/reason for her not telling her partner).

Friendly Fire

  • Michael and Tavia play a pair of cohabiting lovers. The first few episodes show what a sweet loving perfect couple they are. However, when Michael proposes to Tavia in public, she rejects him because of her potential breast cancer which he does not know of, and the two eventually separate due to misunderstandings although they still love each other. Throughout the series, the characters (Tavia’s dad and Louis Yuen)  try to push them back together where Tavia’s dad pretends his health conditions have worsen, making Tavia pretend she is still with Michael so they two can continue acting as a couple.  Tavia’s dad and Louis are actually quite childish- There was another scene where they made Tavia have another very strong alcohol and have Michael accompany her. She becomes dizzy and it eventually rains hard so the two are soaking wet. Michael eventually takes her to some apartment to rest for the night. He starts taking off her wet clothes. I thought it was a bit funny/weird/awkward when Tavia asked him “What are you doing?” Michael replied “Your clothes are wet, thought I’d help you take them off”. Tavia: “Thanks- your clothes are wet too, let me help you too”. Surely they would be in such an awkward position! The two eventually could not resist and the ex-lovers start kissing again. The two are suddenly interrupted by police which start knocking on their door for ID check- I thought that was pretty funny comic relief lol Tavia was so embarrassed and hiding under the blanket XD (not like hiding will stop them from knowing who she as haha)  I actually liked this scene because it showed more of the character’s internal struggle and at the same time was pretty light hearted. At the end, after Michael’s father (played by Benz Hui) passes away and Tavia’s father enlightening her to cherish life with loved one no matter how short it may be- the two end up back together in the finale.

Friendly Fire

  • Sammy Leung plays Michael’s adopted younger brother and a cop. This is the first time I’ve seen Sammy in a TVB drama and it’s clear that he acting isn’t the greatest, but he is surely a refreshing face! His character is one of the funnier ones in the drama although I actually prefer when he’s more serious and mature. His character can get pretty annoying to watch. He and Sharon share a lottttttt of scenes together- it’s like TVB trying to throw in everything possible on them- During their first encounter, Sharon was an undercover cop who pretended to be a prostitute and accused him of touching her. They then chase the criminal where Sharon saves Sammy from falling off the building, but ripping off his pants in the process. She then moves into working under him and lives in the next door unit where they constantly passed things across the window to each other. Despite TVB’s attempts, I don’t feel much for this couple and it always seemed as though Sharon didn’t really like Sammy that much. Not in that way anyway. They seemed more like friends and I cringed quite a bit when Sammy was pursuing her because it was so cheezy!! Their relationship dragged on forever in the last episode which made me dread this couple even more; with her getting married to her fiancée (Played by Stephen Huynh), and typical TVB “I’m moving overseas with my fiancee” airport chasing scene.
  • Sharon plays a cop, from a rich family background and in a long term 10 year relationship with her fiancée who is only revealed later when Sammy starts pursing her (how convenient!) I feel her character is underdeveloped and a bit shallow/hallow as well. She looks like a rookie cop to me, yet somehow is able to display awesome shooting skills, fighting in dress and heels. She makes being a cop seem so easy…
  • Louis Yuen plays Tavia’s best friend, a doctor and is mainly there to bring Tavia and Michael’s character together. At first I thought his character was gay since he acted quite feminine, his taste in style was a bit off, and did very gossipy things like trying to pair Michael and Tavia again; later attempting to pursue Grace to rid her from Michael. His character doesn’t really do anything else  (perhaps a little comic relief?)
  • Grace Wong’s character appears to be a simple minded person (too naive)- looks good on the outside, but hollow on the inside. I felt that she didn’t have much of a character and didn’t feel for her. We also see quite a few scenes where Tavia becomes quite jealous when Grace appears as the new secretary at their work place who is after Michael. For storyline purposes, she and Louis ends up falling in love *raises eyebrow*. I guess they’re a better match than with her and Michael given that he was never really interested in her. I thought it was funny when she went to “break up” with Michael when they weren’t really even together. She was so worried that she would leave Michael heartbroken XD I guess that was probably one of the cutest side of her lol

Friendly Fire

  • I felt the trainees were quite a waste of space- they hardly did anything for the story other than Samantha Ko getting raped and the trainees all being there for her. There was not much focus on the trainees and they still felt like newbies to me in the end because we don’t see much of them progress and develop. Samantha is also the only trainee who has screen time in court. The felt character development was poorly written. At the start we see Oscar and the other boys not taking their new role seriously, especially Oscar who appeared to be the smarty-pants, thinks he knows it all, but proven wrong after Michael put him through the tests which showed he didn’t know, nor put much effort into studying the cases etc. We never see him successfully perform or shine. There would suddenly be a random scene where Oscar and Samantha are selected because they’re the top two to help out on a case…Really?? =\ I also didn’t like how they started showing flashbacks/photos of “happy times” the trainees shared together, when we didn’t even see their characters develop. It felt rushed and TVB just trying to show they are “best friends” and always there for each other.
  • This is actually the first role I’ve actually remembered seeing Samantha in. I must admit she does look quite pretty, looks young and suitable for the role. I felt she turned into one of the main characters after the rape scene with so much more screen time that it made me think it was only TVB’s way of promoting her. Samantha’s character has got to be the strongest/courageous victim of rape I’ve seen in TVB history. At the end, Michael lost the case yet she didn’t give up on the legal system or her beliefs in it. Wow. Any normal girl would have totally collapsed, especially all the hard work she put in to get to where she as. After the rape case ended, she continued to get harassed online but was able to come out to confront him once again in public.

Friendly Fire

  • This is the first time I’ve heard of Alice Chan but based on the number of screen-time she got, felt like she was in heaps of episodes! I think Alice makes quite a good villainess as a seductive business woman. She looks like a mix of Sheren Tang and Astrid Chan! This final case brought all the characters together so it seemed like a nice case to conclude the series. However, somehow I felt the conclusion was quite anti-climatic though! I was expecting something a bit more, especially given there was almost a whole episode left in the finale for something to happen. Instead, the remainder of the episode was just to wrap up the love relationship of the main characters (which unfortunately dragged on forever and bore me to tears)
  • Other than watching how Michael and Tavia were going to get back together, the other main focus of the series being the cases, were quite interesting to watch. From memory they were quite enjoyable, and the slight difference in this lawyer series compared to other lawyer series is the point of view being from the Department Of Justice. It is their roles, not only to work side-by-side with the police/cops and to prosecute, they also evaluate the evidence they have at hand, to find out the truth to bring justice, not merely defending for their “client” (e.g Patrick’s case)
  • Derek Kwok plays the main “bad” lawyer in the series and Michael’s main rival. I slightly felt sorry for him in the end when he was used by Alice and it was interesting to see Michael defend for Derek in the end in court. Having finished this series about 2 weeks ago, I don’t particularly remember the cases, other than Samantha’s rape case, and the last one involving Alice killing Benz. These two stood out the most based on their screen-time and involvement of the characters.

Friendly Fire

  • All in all, the series was enjoyable, but not a must-watch series. I think it has a lot of flaws in terms of character development and relationships, with quite a few unrealistic plots in there (e.g Alice chasing Benz in her car while he was on a bike; and how he managed to get home after hit by the car). The acting was pretty average too, with nothing exceptional. However, at the rate TVB is going with their quality of TVB dramas, I wouldn’t be surprised if this one turns out to be one of the better ones for 2013 (Hope not!)

TVB The Confidant

The Confidant was a series I had anticipated after knowing Wayne Lai and Michelle Yim were going to be the leads in it. Their performance did not disappoint and the drama explored many interesting themes. I felt the story was very well crafted and I could foresee a lot of character development and changes (mostly characters turning bad) as the story progressed.

However, there was something about it that never got me hooked.  I enjoyed the beginning, but then soon after I felt the story got quite slow and dragged on in some areas (mostly characters I didn’t care for as much e.g Aimee Chan (Princess Wo-shek). I became quiet bored of the drama but continued to watch on for the story to pick up and while I waited for more episodes of Silver Spoon Sterling Shackles. The Confidant has a grand feel to the series- the cast, genre and opening themesong. When I started watching it, I didn’t have any background knowledge on the historical context it was based on, nor who the historical figures were. After doing a bit of reading, I was interested to see TVB’s adaption/interpretation of history. Not bad indeed.

What kind of disturbed me about this series is how it seems to promote doing bad deeds, especially towards the end of the series. Those who are kind-hearted and forgive are portrayed to be the ‘dumb’ ones as bad things always happen to the good people. It makes you wonder if there really is karma. This is re-enforced over and over in the drama; the countless times Wayne has let people off in hope they’ll change for the good or because of previous friendships.  They were not grateful for it either and only used it as another opportunity for them to seek revenge.

Michelle Yim as Empress Dowager Cixi

TVB The Confidant

A very powerful woman who ‘rules’ China. Often misunderstood for her misuse and desire to stay in power, her character constantly has to resolve issues and protect her kingdom. She has quite good chemistry with Wayne Lai and it is comforting to know she has Wayne by her side to support her. While she may seem ruthless, I enjoyed watching her love for her son (played by Oscar Leung). While it may have seemed heartless for her to never trust Maggie Shiu ever since she found out she tried to poison her- that action appeared justified and correct when we find out Maggie’s true intentions and also her alarming warnings against Natalie Tong (Oscar’s wife) in the finale. Overall I think Michelle did a very good good portraying Cixi

Maggie Shiu as Empress Dowager Ci’an

TVB The Confidant

The evil villain of the series, supported by Ngo Wah (Head Eunch). She seemed quite friendly at the start but turns out she is a devil on the inside. She turns quite crazy towards the end and did so many unforgivable things. I thought her character was quite inconsistent throughout the series. I thought she cared about Aimee Chan; I thought she cared about the emperor- Was it really because of how Michelle Yim kept ignoring her and unwilling to forgive her which turned her so evil or was she always like that anyway?

The Eunuch: The 5 “brothers”

TVB The Confidant

Wayne Lai as  Lei Lin-ying

TVB The Confidant

I admired his character for his loyalty- to his friends and masters (Selena Li (Concubine Yuen), then later Michelle Yim (Empress Dowager Cixi) and Oscar Leung (Tung-chi Emperor). He was a good character, very intelligent but deliberately buried his talents at the beginning. He didn’t have the urge for power, knowing “Servant are always a servant” and just wanted to live peacefully and not get into other’s business. I think this role is actually pretty hard to play as his character transits to a commanding, powerful Eunuch by Michelle’s side.  Although I classified his character as good, his character is still very much human with flaws. For example to protect his friend Nancy- he let her violent/ scumbag husband to die although he could have saved him). In the final episode, we finally see a more ruthless side to his character, after all the traumatic things that happened in his life where his morals around being a good person becomes questionable and his actions can’t be justified. I watched the alternate ending where he actually planned to betray Michelle Yim for self protection, but later changed his mind after realising how much she cared for him. That was kind of creepy to be honest, although given the changing circumstances, its quite a human natural instinct to want to protect oneself. I prefer the original ending where he remained loyal the entire time, although he was at a point in time where he almost gave up hope in humanity (after Raymond Cho and Nancys death)

Raymond Cho as On Tak-ho

TVB The Confidant

I was quite surprised by Raymond Cho’s character development. Based on his overly ambitious desire for power and how well he was good at sucking up to Michelle Yim- I thought he would eventually turn corrupted or turn to Maggie Shiu’s side, with Ngo Wah. His character was a huge contrast to Wayne Lai’s, although they followed the same master (Chung King-fai ). I thought he would ultimately turn out to be the evil guy due to jealousy of Wayne Lai for being Michelle Yim’s favourite. Instead however, he remained loyal to Michelle Yim the entire time and treated Wayne as his own brother.

I felt sorry for him when he did so much for his “wife” when she truly didn’t deserve it. He was blinded by his love for her. She constantly had affairs with other men and even when he knew, he was in denial and pretended he didn’t see and forced himself to be oblivious. He felt he owed her because he wasn’t a true man which left him vulnerable to the evil Ngo Wah (Chan Fuk)  who schemed to trick him into there was a cure to his loss of man-hood (if there’s a better word for this lol) His sacrifice for Michelle was quite sad…after all that he’s done- he died with no respect- hung outside naked, and only shamed.. It was Dowager Cixi’s ways to rid the rumours of her having an affair with him. I thought that was a good way of TVB’s interpretation of putting in historical context given that there were rumours of this happening. Only his death were they able to get rid of the rumours although the Emperor (Oscar) still did not believe his mother.

 Power Chan as Pang Sam-shun

TVB The Confidant

I wish Power Chan got Best Supporting Actor- he is extremely adorable in the Confidant and is my favourite character in the entire series. While most characters change from good to bad, his character gradually changes from “bad” to good. One of my favourite episodes was when Wayne and Power had to work together to find the missing emperor and where their friendship started building. Previously he was almost like a big bully who goes on about how he doesn’t need friends, spoilt by his evil uncle Ngo Wah. He beat up and locked up Raymond Wong and didn’t let him see his mother for the last time and made Nancy lose her unborn baby..however, we later see the goodness in him, and how he changes and finally values his friendships. His character is pretty much the only one who remains so pure until the end. Even when Wayne turned his back on Michelle Yim after Raymond Cho’s death to start a new life with Nancy, or when Wayne told Power he is going to betray Michelle and work for Natalie Tong (Empress Ka-shun)  and Maggie Shiu  (Empress Dowager Ci’an) Power remained loyal to the Emperor and refused to leave him not matter what. I’m so happy for him when he joined the group with Wayne and when the emperor valued him so much. He learned to forgive, even Raymond Wong who killed his own uncle . I’m glad his character lives at the end 🙂

 Raymond Wong as  Yiu Sheung-hei

TVB The Confidant

Raymond Wong’s character development was interesting too. At the start, he plays his  typical good-guy role where his ambition is to become a medical practitioner. Somehow I’m not that convinced he is as good they make him out to be though- I mean really? He becomes the head in a palace? I liked his character nevertheless 🙂 As a eunuch, he surely doesn’t act much like a girl. We don’t see much of his feminine side either (unless that’s just the stereotype?) He is very much a man, with emotions and feelings for a woman and he and the princess eventually fall in love.  Is that even possible for an eunuch and a princess? In The Confidant – yes.  Raymond Wong’s character is pretty much a man which I find quite odd, but interesting at the same time. I didn’t find Raymond Wong and Aimee Chan that cute as a couple…Actually I think it was more Aimee’s character which I did not like ( Nominated for Best Supporting Actress-you gotta be kidding right?) It was also a bit annoying watching Aimee sick all the time (almost like her role in The Last Steep Ascents) and her extremely animated personality made her seem so modern and out of place.

Despite them wanting to elope, Raymond Wong eventually rejects the Princess and lets her marry another man knowing he cannot ever give her the happiness she desires. In exchange to stay away from the princess, Empress Dowager granted him the title of head of the medical department. Years pass but Raymond has never been able to stop thinking about the Princess. I liked how realistic they made the storyline where the Princess actually moved on to love her husband and has put the past with Raymond behind her. Raymond’s love for the princess made him extremely vulnerable to the evil Maggie Shiu and Ngo Wah, who misleads and uses him in thinking the Princess still loved him and wanted to elope with him. They then capture the princess and in exchange for her life, he turned his back on his morals, the brotherhood/friendships he had and loyalty towards Michelle Yim- by betraying Raymond Cho and accusing Raymond Cho and Michelle Yim to have an affair. This eventually causes the death of Raymond Cho and turned Oscar (Emperor) against his own mother (Michelle Yim).

Raymond was so devastated to find out Aimee no longer loved him and had no intentions of being with him. Raymond’s love turned into hate. He hated her so much he left her to die. True human nature? Possible. I knew from that point, Raymond’s character had changed. He no longer believed in goodness and only sought revenge. He kills Ngo Wah but fail to kill off Maggie Shui despite his attempts. To reach his goals he was willing to poison the palace and kill the emperor to take revenge on Maggie. From a doctor whose motto and value were always to save those no matter what, he turned blinded by revenge. In the end, Wayne and Power let Raymond off..not sure if that was a wise decision…

Edwin Siu as Ling Tim Sau

TVB The Confidant

I disliked his character from the beginning. He was foolish and always appeared evil to me, despite being Wayne’s apprentice. And yes, as expected, he betrays Wayne and the gang and worked for Ngo Wah and Maggie Shiu for nothing other than power. He became one of the most evil characters in the series; and I hated him to the bones: he brought in prostitutes for the emperor which eventually caused his death, caused the death of Raymond Cho, sold drugs to Maggie (which I won’t mind to much haha) and in the end, kills Nancy Wu (Sin-yun) when Wayne let him stay with them. He was so annoying to watch that I don’t even want to talk about him haha. He was ungrateful and never learned from his mistakes…Seriously– evil til the end!!

Nancy Wu as Sin-Yun :

Nancy plays a palace maid who was one of Wayne’s closest friends and later becomes his lover, after she is finally freed from her husband (played by Eric Li) who is a total drug addict. She was tortured so badly that it became quite realistic whenshe wanted to die with him because he was a living nightmare. I liked the scene where Wayne was there to help her rid her smoking addiction- reminded me of Sheren Tang and Wayne Lai in “No Regrets” xD I’m still not sure whether Wayne loved Nancy the way she loved him since he was quite hesitant about his feelings near the middle of the series and he felt more like family with her.

I think her death was quite sad. It was sad because Wayne, Nancy and their new adopted baby boy would have been such a happy family..if only!! In the alternate ending, Nancy does not die but remains unconscious (Note: there were no scarring left on her face despite the stabbing!) and at the end- wakes up. In short, alternate ending was too unrealisc…but I will let that slip by..

TVB The Confidant

What are your overall thoughts on “The Confidant”? I know I haven’t really spoken about some of the other characters. These were just the main ones I wanted to talk about…

The ratings seemed pretty good and was nominated in top 3 best series for 2012 – have you seen it?

Best Actor and Best Actress
Best Actor
Wayne Lai (“The Confidant”)
Congrats to Wayne Lai for a well-deserved win for his role in The Confidant 🙂 Wayne Lai is a great actor no doubt and his performance in “The Confidant” was solid. I am still left a bit shocked though since I seriously thought Raymond Lam would take home the award this year, considering this award if voted by fans for the first time.

Best Actress
Tavia Yeung (“Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles”)

Best Supporting Actor
Koo Ming Wah (“Divas in Distress”)

I wish Power Chan won this award instead….I absoluately adored his character “Pang Sam Sun” in The Confidant. I am confident in Power Chan’s acting abilities though- hopefully he will continue to shine and get the award next year. Something tells me that if Koo Ming Wah doesn’t get it this year, he probably won’t in the future..Good on him though. The way they presented teh Best Supporting Actor and Actress Award this year was weird. Top two were annouced and they were given a chance to say their thank-yous, before announcing the winners themselves. ODD.

Best Supporting Actress
Nancy Wu (“Gloves Come Off”)- A great performance in “Gloves Comes Off” and definately a breakthrough role for her. This award wasn’t unexpecting, especially when she took home this award at the Astro Awards earlier in the month. Mandy Wong was the runner up for this category.

My Favourite TV Male Character
Kenneth Ma (“The Hippocratic Crush”)- I adore most of Kenneth Ma’s roles lately, probably other than “Silver Spoon” where he was quite wooden…lol His role in Hippocratic Crush was neat, though I really wanted Raymond Lam to win this award for “Highs and Lows”

My Favourite TV Female Character
Kate Tsui (“Highs and Lows”)- A big congrats to Kate Tsui! I really liked her character as Pat and glad she got some sort of recognition. I wish she won Best Actress instead though- it was such a breakthrough role for her She seemed quite sad when she was doing her speech and it seemed like she had lost hope in the Best Actress Award since she won this award. It was also a bit sad when she mentioned that she’s not liked by the audienceso never thought about winning this award. Hopefully Kate will continue to work hard for next year!

Most Improved Male Artiste
Oscar Leung (“L’Escargot”, “Queens of Diamonds and Hearts”, “House of Harmony and Vengeance”, “Tiger Cubs”, “The Confidant”, “Big Boys Club”)

Most Improved Female Artiste
Mandy Wong (“L’Escargot”, “The Hippocratic Crush”, “Tiger Cubs”, “Divas in Distress”)

Best Series
“When Heaven Burns”
What the ….? Seriously did not  expect this..
Outstanding Artistes Award
Chin Ka Lok, Benz Hui, Sunny Chan, Lee Sing Cheung & Carol Cheng

Lifetime Achievement Award
Liza Wang

Overall, I’m quite satisfied with the results and I’m really happy for most of the winners.  My biggest shocker is “When Heaven Burns” taking away best series. I did not enjoy that series…
