Palace Scheming (Beyond the Realm of Conscience Themesong)
English translations by Chibi

Pledge undergoes a society’s transformation
Good and evil unreported eventually pays a price
Equal step shocks the world
Silk as like mirror assembles like a painting
Appearance like snow, does not taint delicate sand, please stay behind
If grasping, stop dreaming, haven’t been favored upon
What you see, hear, you cannot trust
Regretful is, when you turn a blind eye to this world, regard the number of dark currents
Loving deeply, speaking the truth, don’t be touched
More heart piercing, more deeply ingrained, don’t sense pain
Once extremely hated, can still be held in ones arm
Past events is like dust, like the wind

Chibi’s Comments: Another touching song performed by Susanna Kwan. Judging from the lyrics alone, the drama will sure have plenty of tears, backstabbing, hatred, guilt, regret and of course, scheming. The last 2 lines almost sank my heart… what a teary line. Anyway, hope you enjoy the translations. If there is anything mistranslated, feel free to correct me 🙂
Who do you think the lyrics will relate to? Drop a comment and let us know!
Very meaningful song. Could you write one for born rich.
Yup! We’ll have a translation for Born Rich up soon 🙂 Stay tuned!
My suggestion 🙂
Promises undergo changes through time
Good and evil (or kindness and cruelty), left unrepaid, has its price
Her emergence shocks the world, her silk is like clear jade, put together like a painting
Her looks like snow, untainted, soft as sand – asking you to stay
(I think here it refers to Kam Ling)
Even in an embrace – stop dreaming – you’re not yet his favourite
Don’t believe what you see or hear
Regretfully, you’ll see when you close your eyes – the ugly and violent side of the world
Love deeply, speak truthfully – but don’t be moved easily
Even if your heart is broken, and your bones hurt – try not to feel the pain
Though two people are together, there’s a chill in the heart
(here it probably refers to Sam Ho?)
(the last line’s different the first verse: 無奈是 兩手相æ“ 也是覺得冰å‡)
last line of second verse (as in your post):
Despite the past hatred, we can still embrace
What has happened belongs to the past, like dust, like the wind
Nice 🙂
does anyone have this in ping yam?
wish i can read chinese characters fluently…
ah… just scrolled down some more and found the ping yam by DKKK 🙂
wow, the lyrics are like telling a story within itself. i can’t wait to watching it! sucks being at college, don’t have time for dramas anymore
yeah 🙂 Although listening to the lovely voice and music can be satisfying on its own- understanding the lyrics just brings that to another level of enjoyment ^_^
Nice translations chibi & frenchbeans
I LOVE this song lyrics, the tune of the song, and Susanna’s voice. It has a grand feel to it and I can just listen to it over and over again.
Yup..it’s stuck in my head as I type..lol
Yea i agree. Susanna’s voice is much stronger than the younger generation. I have listened to this song many times now.
The music has been stuck in my head a for a while now XD

The above is all the lyrics to the full version of the song.
The Chinese lyrics are poetic and are also structured like a poem so I tried not to rephrase any of them. The translation is not as beautiful as it can be. The lyrics and spacing/grouping of words in the first verse I posted are taken from the Chinese subtitles of the opening of the drama so they should be correct. Sometimes, there can be different interpretations of the same verse when the grouping of words is different. Below is my interpretation and translation of the song, both of which I find make most sense. I merely translated the lyrics. Where places I’ve put ‘you/your’ can be ‘she/her’ or ‘I/me’ as well, I think. The song is either addressed to 三好, regarding三好 or sang in 三好’s shoes.
Note: I wrote down the lyrics to the second verse (or half) of the song by ear so they might be wrong.
Pledge(s), they experience the changing world
(Doing) Good or evil, prices have to be paid even when you have not received your reward/punishment (You have to pay a price for doing either a good or evil deed even if ‘what goes around comes around’ has not been fulfilled.)
Shocking the world without trying
(Your) silk is like a mirror; when put carefully together it is like a painting.
(Your) Face is like snow
(Like)Untainted delicate grains of sand
Please stay
If you are being embraced, don’t dream on, you are still not loved/his favourite
What you see, what you hear, do not believe them
(What is) regretful is, (you) can only see how many undercurrents the world has when (you) close (your) eyes.
(Even if they) Love (you) deeply, (even if they) say (it) convincingly, don’t be moved.
(What is supposed to be ) more heart-breaking —–lit. heart-drilling—–, (what is supposed to be) more memorable it is engraved into (your) bones —–lit. bone-engraving —– , (you are numb so you) do not feel the pain.
(What is) regretful is, (even when) two hands are joined —–lit. embracing—–, (you) still feel icy cold
Pledge(s), they are incinerated in the beautiful view
Until even the jade piece becomes useless —–lit. failed—– earthenware (or root tile(s))
Looking back at that early-summer day
(A) Cool meal, (and) royal make-up; (your) face was as beautiful as a flower
(A) Good character —–lit. person kind—–, (and an) honest/humble face
Tears can bear flowers
The view is beautiful like a painting
If you are being embraced, don’t dream on, you are still not loved/his favourite
What you see, what you hear, do not believe them
(What is) regretful is, (you) can only see how many undercurrents the world has when (you) close (your) eyes.
(Even if they) Love (you) deeply, (even if they) say (it) convincingly, don’t be moved.
(What is supposed to be ) more heart-breaking (what is supposed to be) more memorable it is engraved into (your) bones, (you are numb so you) do not feel the pain.
(Even one who was) once abhorred (by you), can be hugged (by you)
The past is like the dust, like the wind
As you can see with the full lyrics of the song, verse one juxtaposes/contrasts verse two so when you compare the two, you’ll know which translation is very likely to be correct. Plus, the spacing in the first verse posted in the first post is incorrect because some groups of words are joined where they should be separated so misinterpretations may arise.
you can download the full version of the song here:

the download link is provided in the video description. i take no credit for the posting of the song and its download link on youtube.
sorry, for the first sentence of the first verse, it should be:
Pledge(s), they withstand the changing world
that is too much things u wrote in the english section did u no wat i did? i copy the lyrics and past in microsoft word so i can read them if i want to. i just love this song. this is one of my favourite cantonese song
and the ninth sentence of the first and second verse should be:
What you see, what you hear, do not believe (in) them
the 5th and 6th sentences of verse 2 should be:
(With a) Good character —–lit. person kind—–, (and an) honest/humble face
(Your) Tears can bear flowers
the fourth sentence of the first verse should be:
(Your) silk is like a mirror; (your) jade piece is like a painting.
5th sentence can also be brows and eyes, literally, instead of face but sometimes they are interchangeable.
the 6th sentence of the second verse should be:
(Your) tears will bear flowers
Thanks for your contribution ^_^
I think the themesong is very nice.
Very poetic but sad, esp the chorus part.
It really fits the series and it’s additive!!
Yes, and I love it when the music plays at the end of each episode too.. so epic and dramatic!
hello! thank you for the lyrics and the translation!
When I first heard this song, I had a feeling this wasn’t grand enough for the series. But as the series goes on, the song seems to make sense and fits in perfectly. Susanna’s voice is thrilling to hear, as always. This is song is very hauntingly beautiful.
You’re welcome ^_^
Really? I thought the song was quite epic (before I even watched the series). But yes, very fitting :D!
Oh, I forgot, do you have a pinyin version of the lyrics? I just can’t stop singing along but I don’t know how to read chinese.. =)
