Episode 22 focuses heavily on Michelle and Susanna. Since Hor Wai is no longer around, it’s likely Susanna or Michelle will be the next successor. However, unlike past rivalry, the hatred has never been so intense when Michelle is tangled in another misunderstanding! Fueled by anger and grief, it seems true vengeance has only just begun.

The episode starts off with Susanna going to see Kwok Keung late one night. She wanted to give Yi Kei a few gifts to keep by her side as she is cremated. Kwok Keung bursts into tears over the death of his wife, and Susanna shows her condolences. This of course fuels rumors and gossips amongst the maids in the palace proceedings. What were they doing seeing each other so late? Will they get back together? Michelle overhears the gossip and disbands them, annoyed by the ridiculous rumor of her friend.

Michelle with Ram and Vin like a happy family

Michelle, Ram and Vin as a happy family

Michelle sees Ram and Vin (Ram’s adopted son) where Vin tells her Tavia has been complimenting Michelle in front of Mary. It is likely she is tipped to be the next Head of Proceedings. The three become very excited by the idea, acting out the scene where her dream comes true. She also hopes to be with Ram one day. Unfortunately, Michelle’s hope is shattered when she soon finds out Susanna was the chosen one instead, leaving her to delegate both the attire & jewelery department. Although slightly disappointed by the news, the two are still on good terms and Michelle even gives her a present. Susanna also took this opportunity to give her the jewelery box she made a while back. This is the first time, after a long time that they were able to sit down as friends and exchange presents 🙂

Susanna and Michelle exchange presents

Michelle gives a present to Susanna to congratulate her. Ram tells Michelle a dark secret…

Michelle asks her about Kwok Keung and whether there’s a chance they will get back together. Susanna hesitates and modestly says Kwok Keung is in love with his wife, and she doesn’t want to be involved since their relationship never developed. This leaves Michelle pondering and pitying her friend’s situation. She can tell just from the way she spoke about him, that she does still love him deeply, but is too afraid to admit it. She shares her thoughts with Ram who excitedly suggests it’s possible the two can still be together. Michelle is confused by his claim and he reveals he knows about a secret that could potentially give them a happy ending. He whispers the secret into Michelle’s ear, leaving her absolutely astonished!

The next day on Ram’s birthday, Michelle is waiting excitedly for him with a birthday present. He went off to do something very important and should be returning shortly. While she was chatting to Vin, some bad news arrived…..Ram is found dead! OMG!!  O_O How abrupt!

Ram dies

Ladies saddened by Ram’s death.

Michelle cries by Ram’s side when the other ladies come in to burn an incense for him. Michelle asks Susanna if she was the last to see Ram that day because he told her he went to see her. She denies it though looking slightly guilty. Another sad and emotional scene.. On a side note, how come Michelle doesn’t hide the fact she ‘loves’ Ram? Is it because he’s dead now so it doesn’t matter? I thought people in the palace were not allowed to experience romance? If so, isn’t it obvious to everyone here she loved him; holding onto his hands while he laid dead? Or is this considered acceptable, since she has been seeing Ram secretly (and no one knew about it)?

Michelle soon discovers Susanna had lied, as a servant witnessed the two talking some time before his death. This raises her suspicions and automatically assumes Susanna was responsible for his death! She confronts Susanna, accusing her of killing Ram because he knew about her ‘secret’. Susanna continues to say she doesn’t know what Michelle is talking about and that it was an accident.

Michelle accuses Susanna for killing Ram

Michelle accuses Susanna for killing Ram

Michelle marries (a deceased) Ram and vows to take revenge, making Susanna’s life miserable. Michelle wants the Head position, and obtains this by blackmailing Susanna with an item which forces her to back down on the role.  I’m trying to understand that Michelle is emotionally unstable, but still…her actions and bitchy look is irritating me >_<!! Argh! (See below image).

On the first meeting with Michelle as the Head, it is obvious to everyone that she has a huge grudge against Susanna. Michelle makes a complete fool out of herself, being extremely prejudice towards Susanna (almost to a laughable extent). She compliments a dumb idea randomly muttered by a maid and disses Susanna’s clever idea. It has never been so apparent that Charmaine, Kara and Susanna are unimpressed, especially when she gives her unreasonable deadlines. When Charmaine helps speak for her, Michelle says that now even Charmaine is concerned for her lack of capability… omg, this is so gay. How very annoying! Anyone else frustrated by this scene?

Michelle seeking revenge

Michelle becomes Head of Proceedings after blackmailing Susanna

When the two are alone, Michelle reveals a baby’s bell. It turns out Susanna had secretly given birth to Kwok Keung’s child and left the baby by a river, disowning him. Back then, she thought she was able to leave with Kwok Keung and so the pregnancy wouldn’t be an issue. However, because of Hor Wai, she missed the opportunity to leave and realised that if anyone discovered she had this child, both she and Kwok Keung would be executed. She heart brokenly left the baby by the river where Ram happened to have witnessed the incident. What happened to the baby? Is he alive? Susanna demands to know what happened to the baby but Michelle says she will only tell  if Susanna can keep her happy.

I initially felt for Michelle’s character, she doesn’t have a villainous heart and seems to be a good person (though sometimes distracted by her resentment towards Susanna).  I think it’s such a shame that when they finally became friends again, because of another misunderstanding they are back in square one. I’m pretty sure someone else was behind it (it’s never that simple). Sadly, until the truth comes out, we can expect a lot of Michelle bullying and Susanna suffering 🙁 It’s really a pity their relationship goes in cycles, but it’s a drama and things just can’t go smoothly!

By the end of this episode I end up really disliking her character. I do admire Michelle as an actress, but I was always a bit unsure of her character Chung Suet-ha 鍾雪霞. I couldn’t decide if I liked her or not, and just when I thought her character was starting to grow on me, I find reasons to dislike her again. I understand her motive and reasons behind them; she thinks Susanna killed her loved one which is a pretty justifiable reason… yet at the same time it’s so illogical. Everything is just based on assumption.

What do you think of episode 22? Do you still like Michelle and feel her actions are justified? Does Michelle and Ram have any chemistry? Did you like their relationship or was it a bit unconvincing? Was her secret predictable? Drop a comment and share your thoughts 🙂

Please refrain from posting character/story spoilers beyond episode 22. Thank You.

Hmm I felt that it was inevitable for Michelle’s sudden change into a bitchy character.. I think if she didn’t get a clue of who killed Ram in this episode, she might even die with him in time to come.. Haha but the scene where Ram ‘gave’ the title of Head of Proceedings to Michelle was very sweet! xD

    • chibi says:

Oh yesh that was really sweet! 😀

That reminds me… does anyone else find it fishy that this is one of the first time it shows Vin with Michelle/Ram, and they made it sound like the three have always been hanging out together…?

      • 'Muff says:

Nah, there were scenes with those three together before =D

Probably weren’t a lot of them in comparison to the entire length of the series, but still 😀

  • Lillian :D says:

I think Michelle’s sudden change made her seem very annoying. So I don’t really like her character that much anymore. Susanna’s secret wasn’t really predictable..I just knew it had something to do with Kwok Keung..

    • chibi says:

Oh okay, well that’s good to know! I actually got it spoiled to me, so as I was watching it- I thought it was obvious (I hate being spoiled like this 🙁 )

And I have to agree…Michelle changed so drastically and became so annoying 🙁

  • *xueling* says:

hahaa. this was the episode that i couldn’t take. it was so annoying! >< rawr). i wasn't prepared for his death whatsoever, it was like pooft, he's dead. so horrible!
I thought that she does not have a villanious heart, she does doesn't like susanna because of the incident 20 years ago, and this newly stirred up misunderstanding. (argh!) I prefer them as friends, really!
i didn't like michelle's character whenever she's picking on susanna, so when she stopped before this episode, she started to grow on me. Especially when she was with ram. they're so awesomely cute together (haha, i can't believe i'm saying this. and i think people will disagree. :D) it was a pity that they didn't develop it and chose to use it on other people instead. (haha, i have a very radical view here)

I thought that it was a nice performance by michelle here! I was also wondering why she could show that she 'loved' ram, and she even managed to 'marry' him. But i suppose that they couldn't do anything to her, because it's no different from like marrying a statue or something. I won't even say if they were seeing in other in secret. I actually wonder if they even started in the first place… the only place where i was kind of convinced that they started was like in episode 19 or somewhere there.

ooh, what a long rant! But i really hated this episode, it made me cry D:, and i usually don't. i lost it when michelle 'married' ram.

ram's death made this show very unwatchable for me, because the scenes of ram and michelle disappeared. and michelle was picking on susanna, which frustrated me. i was stuck here for really long, but i finished the entire show 2 days ago, haha 😀
suffice to say that i was not 100% pleased.

    • benchesandstools says:

YES OMG RAM AND MICHELLE ARE SO CUTE TOGETHER!! Although its really weird for them to have a relationship given their status. But my heart went out to them when Michelle decided to marry Ram! 🙁

      • chibi says:

They were quite cute in this episode, but I was always a bit unsure about their ‘relationship’ XD Every time I saw them interact, I thought it was just a unrequited kind of romance- nothing too serious. I always thought Michelle was just flirting with Ram all the time (so he can help her)…until an episode it was confirmed and thought ‘WHAT? They actually love each other?” XD XD Kinda came to me as a shock.

Anyone else feel the same? Or is it just me? XD XD

      • *xueling* says:

oh man. someone agrees with me :D:D hahaah
i absolutely adore them together (again, i can’t believe i’m saying this, but whenever i’m watching, especially from episode 19 onwards, i was like when is the scene coming? :D)
they’re so cute 😀 (okay. sorry to all who don’t agree)
and it was so sad when michelle decided to marry a dead ram D:

    • chibi says:

Oh! So this was it! haha…this episode annoyed me a lot too… Michelle looks so bitchy >.< lol. I don't think I was even this annoyed by Tavia so far!

But yeah… you finished the series…you're way ahead of me! hehee..

      • *xueling* says:

i thought that this episode was going to be like awesome, given the fantastic starting and the super cute scene. so i was getting all happy and then *pooft* and then ram died ><
I really loved her character after she reconciled with like susanna and was with ram. that was the best part of the series for me ^^
and yeahh, it doesn't help at all that michelle is a good actress so she's really bitchy.
i was annoyed with the character (i adore her as an actress) and the person who reduced her to this state. Most importantly, the scriptwriter for killing off ram D:

Yeahh, i think she's more annoying than tavia, but i like to watch her better coz she seems to be more multi-faceted. tavia just wants power and more power and she has no conscience left in her.

  • smijnahc says:

    Hi Chibi…

i was just wondering if you could do me a favour and post the synopsis’ faster? I dont mean to rush you, but I am doing a project on this series and your summaries are REALLY HELPING, so if you can post it as soon as possible, it would be great. Please and Thank You? 🙂 help me out! 😀

    • KTVB says:

Sounds like some plagarism there 😛

      • chibi says:

        It concerns me a little..even. o_o

        • smijnahc says:

ohohooh im SO SRYY.. i should clear myself. im just looking for parts in the series. so instead of scanning every episode, i can look at ur wonderful summaries to help me. I dont mean to take anything at all. im so sry if i meant wrong. I didnt mean it. Hope you understand.

    • chibi says:

      Hi smijnahc,

I’m glad you’re enjoying the summaries & it’s helping you, but I am getting a bit tired of repeating myself.. I will post them up when I can, really- I try. It takes time to write these up (and I have a full-time job and a life outside TVB) so you will just have to be patient. Please bear with me.

  • kinki says:

I see Ram and Michelle’s relationship as a family more than as a ‘couple’ since Vin’s in there along with them..it’s like a family of 3! They are enjoying to watch..something different in the series..I found them warm to watch for change! RIP Bo Gong Gong~*

At this point, we can see how ‘evil-like’ Michelle can really be when her hatred builds to seek for revenge. I’ve also always liked Michelle as an actress, but her character was kinda annoying to watch. It made her seem so dumb..always fighting with Susanna and then moments later..they reconcile again (from before)..it made them seem so stupid and naive!

Btw, do you guys feel that Michelle and Susanna are just like older/another version of Tavia and Charmaine (although I guess Michelle’s not as bad as Tavia but there’s sure some resemblance). I dunno if anyone mentioned it before..but that’s what I feel at this point of the series.

    • *xueling* says:

yeahh, the atmosphere is really warm and nice 😀 i love watching them ^^
her character is so annoying here, and i like her as an actress too.
i think bo gong gong can’t RIP because once he’s gone look at what michelle became like. T.T

i think they are like another version of tavia and charmaine, but both are less extreme (michelle is less bad and susanna is less good). and charmaine is good until she becomes like unbelievable. tavia is horrible until she is like unbelievable (well, obviosuly, i enjoy the older gen better. disagree!)

      • chibi says:

i think bo gong gong can’t RIP because once he’s gone look at what michelle became like. T.T

True..it’s such an ugly side of her character 🙁

    • chibi says:

Btw, do you guys feel that Michelle and Susanna are just like older/another version of Tavia and Charmaine

I thought about that actually 🙂 I think I’ll watch on to see if there’s more incidents that support that theory.

  • tvbholic says:

oh yes, i disliked michelle’s character sooooo much in this episode and a few episodes to come. i just found her really lame and stupid to be so overwhelmed by assumptions and jumping to conclusions. u have no idea how i wanted to jump into the shop to tell suet-ha to wake up her idea..

and also if she really love Bo Gong Gong, she should have known that he dislikes rivalries and lovess peace. so whenever she cries in front of Bo Gong Gong and in the next moment looking all evil, i just thought that she doesnt understand Bo Gong Gong enough lol.

and she indeed look so much older in the Sheung Gong uniform. but i guess it’s cos of Hor Wai wearing the uniform before..

    • *xueling* says:

hahaha. i disliked her too, and in the coming few episodes. stark contrast to how much i loved her in like the first half of episode 22. it was soo sweet!
I wanted to tell her to just wake up too, coz she was annoying me so bad. (but if i was going to get annoyed, i would be annoyed at the person who reduced her to this state. so i’m more annoyed with that person instead)
i have a feeling that when she cries in front of bo gong gong and later looks all evil was the period of time where she’s still making use of him. ( i think there is a transition phase between making use of him and later really liking him. but it’s not obvious, because they don’t spend time on it at all. so wasted.)

really enjoyed the pairing though. ahhh >< i'm going crazy

      • tvbholic says:

oh when i mean cryin in front of bo gong gong, i meant crying in front of his altar, esp the part she wept so much then after that saying she wont cry anymore then plotting revenge and the next moment. being mean and evil to susanna… REALLY ANNOYED ME BADLY!!

        • *xueling* says:

Oh haha, you mean that part? Her character went from my favourite in the first half of episode 22 (and from several episodes before that too) to my most hated after that scene! She annoyed me more than tavia, (doesn’t help that her acting is pro). But i think at the end she is still one of the characters that i loved most (together with susanna and ram!)

      • chibi says:

i have a feeling that when she cries in front of bo gong gong and later looks all evil was the period of time where she’s still making use of him. ( i think there is a transition phase between making use of him and later really liking him. but it’s not obvious, because they don’t spend time on it at all. so wasted.)

Yes, this has always confused me a bit… I can’t tell whether it was real feelings back then or not. I’m not very convinced..

    • chibi says:

and she indeed look so much older in the Sheung Gong uniform. but i guess it’s cos of Hor Wai wearing the uniform before..

..Exactly my thoughts o_o.. she looks so old.. I actually find that idea of wearing uniforms CREEPY. I mean..to wear the clothes someone else previously wore (and who is now dead) is a bit weird… but I assume they get a new outfit and not actually wear a second-hand one XD lol. Excuse my lame random thoughts here.

  • Fiona says:

~sigh~ sometimes, Michelle just freaks me out.
    I know and remember that I said I like Michelle before…but after watching this episode…ummm…NO I DON’T!!!
LOL…Michelle’s present to Ram is wierd…I mean…were they bowls or something?? Ughhh…that sounds so odd!!!

And another thing: Whenever there’s scenes with Michelle crying, I always feel so uncomfortable watching her…not just this drama, but others too, like Moonlight Resonance. I like Michelle, I really do, but her crying scenes are really bad 😛
And then the other part, before Michelle became seunggong, she was talking to Susanna in that room, where she showed her the bell in her hand, her eyes were HUGE!!! I’m sorry. I had to mention that cuz she really looked scary and terrible, when her chracter is actually a really nice, and she’s not even evil… 🙁

    • chibi says:

I mean…were they bowls or something?? Ughhh…that sounds so odd!!!

lol, they keep saying they want to “dui sec” which I assume literally means eating in front of each other (with each other’s company). I think only couples really do that in those times, so her giving him bowls meant she wanted to be with him, and for the two to eat meals together like a couple 🙂 Hope this explains it!

I like Michelle, I really do, but her crying scenes are really bad 😛
It is a bit awkward, isn’t it?

where she showed her the bell in her hand, her eyes were HUGE!!!
Oh yes that was CREEEEEPY!!! >.<

  • 'Muff says:

This episode was so sad. 🙁 I actually quite enjoyed the relationship between Ram and Michelle; I thought it was cute and refreshing from all the scheming going on in the Palace.

Michelle was all happy before Ram died and then… 🙁 and because she assumed that Susanna killed Ram, she started hating her even more intensely than ever before! Such a pity, since they’d reconciled before, and had been on such good terms that Michelle really didn’t mind that much that Susanna was chosen as Head of Palace Proceedings.

I actually thought Susanna’s secret wasn’t unpredictable. XD Pity you had it spoilt for you though. I hate spoilers so much D8<

  • chibi says:

I actually thought Susanna’s secret wasn’t unpredictable. XD Pity you had it spoilt for you though. I hate spoilers so much

    Umm.. do you mean it is predictable or not predictable? XD Sorry, it kinda confused me ^^;

  • Kayy LOVES RI says:

Yesh Susanna kinda had this brought on to herself i mean she could of told the truth secretly to michelle after everyone left i mean if they were good friends they could trust each other.

“Susanna demands to know what happened to the baby but Michelle says she will only tell if Susanna can keep her happy.”

i was like hehe goodluck with that considering she was picking susanna =)

    • chibi says:

Yesh Susanna kinda had this brought on to herself i mean she could of told the truth secretly to michelle after everyone left i mean if they were good friends they could trust each other.

I don’t think so… When the two talked afterward, Susanna explained the reason she had lied earlier. At the time there were many people present and she didn’t want to bring up Kwok Keung in case it brought upon more rumors about them. Michelle didn’t believe her explanation anyway..

  • j.cee says:

I think Michelle is so stubborn and she won’t believe someone who she knew for over 20 years. Susanna did not blame her for the food poisoning thing. Michelle does not even have enough evidence and just blamed this incident on her and keeps bullying her now. Susanna already let her be “sheung gung” and she took this as a chance to keep on picking on her.

    • Summer says:

Ya!!! in BTROC, michelle is a bit stubborn!!! haizzz!!! she and susanna has know each other for 20 years. she still don believe susanna. i pity susanna!!

  • tan yin ee vivian says:

when tavia with chairmaine be best friend tavia look beautiful and liketo help people. but when she become a wife of emperor

  • V.Tran says:

I liked Michelle when she’s nice and happy, I didn’t like it when she’s mean to Susanna. Michelle is mean to Susanna is because Michelle misunderstood Susanna for closing the chance to get out of the palace to see her dying mother.

This is off topic but, does anyone know which episode Michelle gives Ram a poster like thing(Ram hangs it up on the room divider(to his bed) arch thingy). I saw the episode but I don’t remember which episode it was. Before I didn’t know anything about this series, I just watched little bit then a little bit with my mom, then I got interested in the series but I didn’t know the name.
