Thoughts on Tavia (Yiu Kam-ling 姚金鈴)

In episode 21 of [Beyond the Realm of Conscience], Tavia really has become someone else. I can’t say I remember much of how Tavia was before she became the concubine.  Every word spoken sounds fake, always trying to present a gentle, kind side of her to impress Moses/Mary. We know this isn’t the real Tavia, but it makes sense she needs to change her mannerism to reflect her status. Appearance aside, what really seems to have changed is her conscience. I’m not sure she even realises that she has changed. The more she gains, the more she desires. No longer is being the concubine good enough for her, she has to be the Queen. She doesn’t want to share, she wants everything to herself. Moses’s heart as a whole. But is she being realistic? Her baby’s death has had an overwhelming impact on her, fueling hatred and vengeance. But is the reason good enough? Why won’t she take it as an accident, instead of putting the blame on others? The fact Tavia is prepared and willing to take the lives of those around her, brings up the question- Is there any good left inside her? Well, we’ll have to watch on to find out! XD

Now let’s get started on this episode!

As planned, Tavia successfully prevents Selena from getting the chance to speak to Moses. She waits by the Turtle’s grave from morning to night but Moses is no where to be seen. She can only hope her father and Kwok Lun can make it back in time.

Tavia who is sadly missing her unborn, lights a candle and sets it free on a lily pad. She promises her unborn she will bring him justice and deviously jumps into the water pretending to commit suicide. This of course elevates Moses’s concern for her who promises to stay by her side.  He assures her that Yi Kei will be gone tomorrow, which should hopefully ease some pain.

Tavia pretends to commit suicide

Tavia cries to Moses about the loss of their baby

Ok, this may sound a bit indifferent; but does anyone else think perhaps Tavia is exaggerating the whole situation? She cries so much because her baby is gone, tells Moses she can’t live anymore but- she barely even got used to the fact she was pregnant before she lost it. It would have been more convincing if the baby lasted longer and it showed Tavia  preparing clothes for him, a bedroom..etc. It would have made it much more sad to lose him; since a bond, a connection was established. Since Tavia found out she was pregnant, did she ever, even once- genuinely speak to her unborn in a loving, motherly way? No. This only makes her dream big about being the Queen and amused that she’s pissing off Selena. I don’t know..the baby just died too soon for me to feel a great deal of sympathy. Does anyone else feel the same?

The next morning, Yi Kei’s death approaches and neither Kwok Lun nor Kwok Keung return. Selena desperately tries to see Moses, but is dismissed. While Moses is in bed with Tavia, Selena is outside crying and pleading for mercy. She begs on her knees and thumps her head onto the ground continuously. Aww.. a really sad and pitiful moment for Selena 🙁 The guard tells Selena she really should go see her mother instead, as she will be leaving any minute now…

Yi Kei dies as Selena desperately runs to her

Selena desperately tries to save her mother

Yi Kei’s death scene was traumatizing and frightening; complimented with Selena desperately rushing to see her for the last time was very emotional. In the end, Yi Kei was strangled to death and Selena was too late.

If you didn’t feel for Selena or Yi Kei before this point, it’s most likely you would after seeing this. Yi Kei was bitchy, but didn’t deserve this…especially when she was wrongly accused! I actually thought Yi Kei died too soon- she could have been an amazing villain, but like Tracy, the character didn’t develop further. In fact, was she ever really a villain? Selena and Yi Kei’s acting of this scene was very convincing 🙂 Great job on their part!

After such a horrible scene with Yi Kei’s death, it was a nice change seeing some dose of “goodness”. Charmaine goes to console Selena, showing her much needed sympathy. Selena is very grateful  for Charmaine’s sincerity and reveals she plans to secretly prepare an ‘offering’ for her mother, as it’s the last filial thing she can do. Although forbidden, Charmaine agrees to accompany her.

Meanwhile, Moses feels sympathy towards Selena for losing her mother, and this alone pisses off Tavia! She thinks Selena is grasping this opportunity to get Moses’s attention, pretending to be upset. Oh come on… her mother has just been executed! Is it really hard to believe she is genuinely upset? Selena would most definitely be having a hard time. Tavia has no heart. She believes Yi Kei’s death isn’t enough to make Selena suffer and continues to seek ways to torture her. She finds out Selena secretly set up offerings for her mother, but understands directly reporting this to Mary wouldn’t do her any harm. Mary has a big heart and if Selena did it out of filial reasons, she will just forgive her. She wickedly twists the truth by throwing (paper) money into the pond, making Selena appear highly disrespectful and ridiculous for causing such a big scene (and making a statement).

Tavia sets up Selena

Tavia sets up Selena but Charmaine is suspicious

Little did she know…when Selena did set up offerings, she didn’t use any paper money. Because it was all done discreetly, she was only able to obtain what she can in the palace, and the stock of paper money ran out. Obviously upon hearing the news, Charmaine realises this isn’t possible. She was there with Selena and knew Tavia was the one behind it. This was quite predictable and I think we all saw it coming. (Right?)

Tavia pretends to be oblivious to the whole situation, but soon loses her composure as Charmaine is standing on Selena’s side. Charmaine reveals she was with Selena at the time, and paper money has only been restocked days after the incident. She did some investigation and found out only Yoyo came in touch with the paper money since. As she attacks Tavia for doing such heartless things, Tavia glances at Yoyo who immediately takes all the blame on herself. Yoyo claims she acted on her own because she felt bad for Tavia. But..why is she getting back at Selena for something Yi Kei did? Tavia bursts and says she doesn’t believe Selena was not involved with the voodoo cursing. She puts on a whole act to gain sympathy from Charmaine, emphasizing how hurt she is after her baby’s death. I thought this was how she felt, but because she had Yoyo lie to cover up her own evil deeds makes her plea lack sincerity. Charmaine is very disappointed, but doesn’t have the heart to dob in Tavia. She leaves without saying anything, and Tavia is seen with a slight smile on her face.

Charmaine confronts Tavia

Charmaine confronts Tavia

No..Tavia does not regret what she has done, not one bit.

What do you think of Episode 21? Do you think Tavia is at the point of no return? Were things a bit too obvious and predictable in this episode? What about Yi Kei’s death- did you want her to die? Drop a comment and let us know! We’d love to hear your thoughts too!

i totally agree !! tavia is becoming a different person but she is still her. it gets worse than this but i won’t say anything so i won’t spoil it. i don’t think that Yi Kei deserved to die because she knew what she did was wrong. i feel so sorry for selena . she didn’t even get to see her mother. this drama is turning around. tavia was good at the start with selena being the really cruel one but now it is turning around the wrong way. the last episode is crazy really good as well !!

    • chibi says:

That’s good to hear 😀 I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of them (to see the extent of Tavia’s evilness XD)

Thanks for leaving a comment and for not posting spoilers ^_^

LOL. I’m getting serious. Please remind me. why does Tavia hate Charmaine again?…was it something like because she keeps helping Selena and her mom and all of tavia’s enemies? LOL…i dont quite remember…haha…anyways…nooo…yikei did not deserve to die…yea…i think Tavia is just getting worse and worse…LOL 😥 starting to feel sorry for Charmaine now too…even though i don’t really like her! 😆 😀

What got me thinking in this episode is when Tavia lighting the candle and placing it on the lily pad, with her unborn child date of death, is that how careless of her if somehow the paper didn’t get burn out and someone would find it and her whole plot would be ruined. Couldn’t she waited til it burn out then jump in the water.

  • Dolly says:

I don’t think Tavia cared for her baby much at all. All that crying, lighting the candle and suicide attempt were just efforts in gaining the emperor’s sympathy and heart. As an audience, I don’t think we were suppose to feel sorry for her for losing the baby and hence there was never any mother-baby bonding. Instead, we are being directed to see the progression of Tavia’s evil side. I think this is the point where the audience start to change their viewpoint on Tavia from the poor misunderstood servant who gets picked on to the cold and calculating concubine.

As for Yi Kei.. Sure she didn’t deserve to die but the moment she challenged the king’s authority and threatened him with her cousin and husband, I was like “Oh hhhell no, she did not! Dungeons! throw her to the dungeons and let her rot!!” So when the king sentenced her to death, I was totally rooting for him and his decision. Yi Kei dying for supposedly causing the baby’s death through some voodoo mumbo jumbo was unjust but for defying the king.. I reckon thats substantial a crime to get her into A LOT of trouble.

Yes, I think this really does define a point where we start feeling a bit :S about Tavia..

defying the king.. I reckon thats substantial a crime to get her into A LOT of trouble. Oh yes, I almost forgot about that! great pick-up!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! ^_^!

    Merry Christmas guys!! 😀
you know i’ve been waiting for this drama ever since like November 2008? LOL the sales presentation looked sooo good…but after watching this drama so far, I didn’t find it as good as i though it would be..did anyone else watch to sales presentation? If you did , i thought everyone was going to be really evil and everything…i mean all the seunggong and stuff… and watching all these episodes of BTROC so far…noooo. like everyone’s so nice! Except for Tavia though…hahahaha i actually thought she is now even more evil than the sales presentation… 🙂

  • Fiona says:

LOL…I remember Tavia before she became the concubine and and all evil…she was such a nice girl!!! She was prob as nice as Charmaine…LOL. but look at her now…~sigh~…it’s getting kinda sad…LOL aand ouch for Selena’s forehead! haha Merry Christmas ^.^

  • kinki says:

Personally, I think Yi Kei’s death was a bit scary to watch. 😡

I didn’t feel that Tavia was exaggerating her child loss. although i felt that the ‘way’ she lost her baby WAS underplayed, it makes sense when you dislike/hate someone, everything seems to be their fault. So i just think that Tavia is making use of every opportunity she had.

I think Tavia is far too off into her own la-la-land. There’s no way of turning back now especially since she doesn’t feel she’s wrong, at all. lol~

Also, kwok lun’s faking illness and not coming back to save her cousin, Yi Kei was so cheap!

    • chibi says:

Personally, I think Yi Kei’s death was a bit scary to watch.

Oh yes >.< But it couldv'e been worse..like if they showed blood leaking from her too while being strangled. XD

it makes sense when you dislike/hate someone, everything seems to be their fault.
      True..

Also, kwok lun’s faking illness and not coming back to save her cousin, Yi Kei was so cheap!
Oh yes, I didn’t include it in the synopsis since a lot was going on already. But LOL! Doesn’t that show how much he values his family? XD It’s stupid, but in-character for Kwok Lun.

  • Kayy LOVES RI says:

I think Tavia was kinda of exaggerating her baby’s death like come on she attempted to suicide just to get moses attention i dont think she was actually suiciding because of the fact that her baby was dead.

As for Yi Kei’s death i think its just too soon but i did feel some sympathy for her when she was dying and the bit when selena was running. it kinda predictable that she wouldnt be able to see Yi Kei before she died though.=)

    • chibi says:

i dont think she was actually suiciding because of the fact that her baby was dead.
yeah, lol. We knew it wouldn’t make sense to really suicide after she says “I will give you justice!” XD

  • jane says:

I feel like Tavia exaggerated her baby’s death too like some of you. It didn’t seem like she really cared about her baby…just the fact that if she has a boy that she will most likely be queen is all she cared about. It’s hard to feel sympathy for Tavia losing her baby when the bottom line for Tavia is to get rid of Selena and take all the power. The baby was a mere prop for Tavia’s plan. Also all the time she took to set up Yi Kei make you think Tavia does not care about her baby until after the set-up and she’s putting on an act to get sympathy.

I feel bad for Selena. She’s spoiled but she does have a good side. At least Charmaine is on her side as she knows Selena didn’t throw the paper money all over the place.

Also, Yi Kei’s death was horrible. They said that they spared her from getting her head chopped off meaning being strangled is suppose to be a lighter punishment but I disagree. Being strangled seems more torturous because you feel yourself dieing while getting your head chopped off is over in a second!!

    • chibi says:

Also all the time she took to set up Yi Kei make you think Tavia does not care about her baby until after the set-up and she’s putting on an act to get sympathy.

Exactly. If you think back when she just lost the baby, the next thing she does is go straight back to scheming. XD

Being strangled seems more torturous because you feel yourself dieing while getting your head chopped off is over in a second!!
      Oh the pain.. except it’s still nicer to have your whole body intact I think.. ^^;

  • *~xueling~* says:

Yikei so did not deserve to die. Noo! (even though i did already know this before i read the summary) but she didn’t deserve to die, she really didn’t like, she was unreasonable towards susanna and all that, she was annoying. but she didn’t deserve to die, really. I felt so annoyed.
I also felt glad the charmaine actually stood on selena’s side because she still supports who is right.
And i felt sorry for selena for losing her mom because it was injustice! >< such a…

one more, did kwok keung did not get back in time to save her right? I did understand why yikei's death was necessary for the plot to progress, but i didn't like it. really no!

this episode got me riled up. but another one got me riled up even worse. really badly.

    • chibi says:

one more, did kwok keung did not get back in time to save her right?

Kwok Keung was occupied in his mission to retrieve all the stolen money because Kwok Lun intercepted and caused a mess. Also, he never knew his wife was dying because no one could contact him (the mission was quite discreet and they deliberately changed routes so people wouldn’t find them)

      Hope that explains it 🙂

this episode got me riled up. but another one got me riled up even worse. really badly.
lol. Can’t wait to see it XD Be interesting to see my reaction to it…

      • *~xueling~* says:

ah okay, i get it now ^^ so that means that he didn’t know to do anything, and when he got back, it came as a shock.

haha, but it got me riled up, but probably alot of people won’t even notice or remember it.(but with that, one of the major reasons why i watch beyond poofed into thin air, which explains why i’m stuck) and you don’t have to wait much longer to see it, it’s coming soon. T.T

  • tvbholic says:

Is there any good left inside her?

there is no good left in her. Her character’s integrity took a downward slide from the time she became Lai Fei and when she called the ever-scheming yoyo to be her maid.

the way she manipulated the doctor, priest and charmaine without a flinch shows how merciless she is.

i really pitied selena’s character in this episode cos she is too helpless up against the scheming tavia and even charmaine cant help her much. sigh

    • tvbholic says:

btw, even though i’ve finished the series. i really love coming back here to read ur review cos they are quite insightful and i love ur personal comments. good job! before i started the show (when u were still reviewing episode 16) i checked back here everyday looking for updates. now that im done… im suprised i still look forward to your post. really like it kudos!!

      • chibi says:

awww..thanks so much. That really means a lot to me as a writer here 🙂 I’m really happy you enjoy reading my opinions etc!

        Thanks for your support!

  • kes says:

Nah… Im not surprise that tavia change.

You see it in almost every “Concubine, Palace”-drama
And like ‘John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton’ say:

“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.”

    On a side note.
I love watching drama where the person you love in the beginning, makes you hate them in the end(and visa versa).
Thats what I call great acting skills.

    Merry Christmas everyone ^^

    • chibi says:

That’s good only if the transition is believable though ^.^;; It’s like how Selena turned from bitchy to goddess within an episode.

      Great.
      lol

  • Mel says:

hmmm tavia is getting more and more greedy i suppose, but it’s not like she never wanted those higher status in the beginning. It’s human nature, you want what you don’t have. I just felt weird, suddenly make selena seems like the goddess when a few episode before she’s all bitchy who things servant are below her and should be trashed yet now she’s all good, more good towards the rabbits then towards tavia in the beginning. Yi kei deaths….though she never stabbed the needle, but if selena didn’t told her off that she would die, she would have done it anyway. she would have stabbed the needle on that day if she wasn’t stopped. though of course it wouldn’t effect tavia baby but she would have done it so it’s not like her death was 100% wrong.

but i have to agreed, they did try to rush it, should have give the baby more time to develope. but maybe they trying to say that tavia is heartless who doesn’t really love her baby but only the status that it bring.

    • chibi says:

but if selena didn’t told her off that she would die, she would have done it anyway.

But it was because she didn’t know it was taboo.. the moment she knew she dropped the idea immediately which shows she’s not as evil as other characters who don’t even hesitate.

selena seems like the goddess when a few episode before she’s all bitchy
      Yup..can’t agree more here!

  • engsamnang says:

i really love this episode,, made me so terrifying, thriller and guessful. Love tavia’s eye freak me out sometimes.

    • chibi says:

      hehe yea, it’s awesome 🙂

      • engsamnang says:

Yes, the eye is so awesome. In comprasion to michelle in MR, Tavia is more evil and more flavoured. Some say she can’t compare to Susan Tse. Just think, Susan is veteran while Tavia is more childish but got extremely improvement. Wait when she 55 to 60 and act evil role. I am sure Tavia will be the most evil in TVb History. Congrate to her for won my most favourite charactor.

  • lavender says:

I’m watching this alongside Born Rich and can’t help comparing how similar Gallen’s character is to Tavia’s. They’re both experiencing moral decay as they crave more power and I’ll admit I love watching these type of characters progress as they are what drives the plot. Plus, I admire how quick thinking they are in scheming the downfall of more “wholesome” characters. But now I find that I’m liking both characters less (though they’re still my favourites out of the series) because they seem totally corrupt and pass the point of redemption. I agree with you saying how much Tavia has actually changed I can’t sympathize or relate to her anymore.

    • chibi says:

Can’t say much about Gallen since I haven’t seen BR, but I’ve heard many things…. xD It’s hard to relate to plain evil characters, aye? XD

  • Intricate strawberrys says:

Heyy chibi. Just stopping by to say your doing a fantastic job! Everytime I watch BTROC, I always come back because its THAT good! Though one question, when will there be episode 22? Its been a while =]

    • chibi says:

      Hi Intricate strawberrys,
Thank you so so much for your really positive comments! Really happy you’re enjoying them!
The next post should be up in the next day or two..sorry for the delay! I need to make some screen caps for it XD

      • engsamnang says:

I also wait for your next episode to episode. you know i watch the drama from the 1 to 15 and then skipped to the end. Love it. And now i watch from where i kipped as from 15 to 30. Now i on 28. ALl the rest, so warm up and interesting and look so mystery and twist. But i don’t understand what they saying ( i can’t speak cantoes) and some scence very unpredictable. Wait for your summary and revealation writing for thoes scene.

  • selena look sad and tavia also look so sad. but i like selena she cries like real. she band down and knoks her head it looks so painful !!!!!!!

  • Marcus says:

I hated how Selena mum died (I hated her bitchiness and her head bobbing of course her hatred against Susanna really annoyed me) But I wish selena could have a better life
